Drexel Hill Little League 8U softball wins another tournament

The DHLL 8U Softball Tournament Team entered the Springford tournament this past week with high hopes and a reputation of strong bats and stellar defense. The girls did not disappoint as they went undefeated in 4 games in which they allowed only 14 runs as they made their way to their 2nd championship of their tournament play this season which concluded last night in Springford. The road was not easy for Drexel Hill as they faced strong competition throughout, but in the championship game against the host team, their strong bats and great gloves prevailed in exciting 6-3 win.

Drexel Hill played in 3 tournaments this post season, advancing to the championship game each time. The league and coaches could not be any more proud of the accomplishments that were achieved by this great group of girls as their team work and work ethic at such a young age is something extraordinary!

IceWork's Women's hockey team The Blackballs returns to IceLine for summer hockey action

On Thursday, July 15, Ice Line in West Chester, Pa kicked off the Women’s Summer 4-on-4 Ice Hockey League. Four Women’s teams will compete in an 8-game season, with post season play-offs and championship. The Blackballs plan to defend their championship status as they face three other local teams, the Concord Flames, the Radnor Mighty Mouse and Ice Line’s own White Lightning.

Four-on-four hockey is played on a standard regulation size NHL rink but with 2 defenders, 2 forwards and a goalie instead of 2 defenders, 3 forwards and a goalie. Without the additional forward, the strategy, pace and puck movement on the ice totally changes the game, resulting in more skating with the puck than passing. The pace of the game is fast and intense, with little stoppage in play.

The Blackballs started the new season on solid ground as they defeated the White Lightening 8-3. The Flames beat the Mighty Mouse 13 – 1. The Blackballs will face the Flames next, on Thursday, July 22 at 9 pm.

The Blackballs, sporting a black 8-ball on their silver jerseys are an independent team entry comprised of players from several teams across the tri-state area. The members of the team include: Amy Christinzio, Aubrey Piechoski, Jackie Grimes, Katie Keeports, Linda Tasione, Margie Sullivan-Rogowski, Maureen Sharon, Rocki Rocco, Sharon Addison, Caitlin Barbakoff, Maddie Weeks, Judy Sokol, Karen Shull, Kate Selna and Patty Gray.

The Blackballs will also be playing in the Summer Sizzler Tournament at Ice Works in Aston the weekend of August 7th and 8th.

With the hot bat of Tom Quinn at the plate, his single down the right field line allowed only 2 runs of the game. A strong defensive performance by the whole team especially 2nd baseman, John Militello, making key plays to end innings. Congrats to players and coaches. The team will compete for the State Championship next weekend in Chichester.

The Springfield Athletic Association girl’s softball travel teams completed their successful seasons in the Del Val Youth League earlier this month. SAA has teams in the Pee Wee (U-10), Midget (U-12), and Intermediate (U-14) divisions in the league.

The Pee Wee A division team finished their season with a record of 5-9, and entered the playoffs as the 5th seed. They lost two hard fought playoff games against teams from Hilltop & Newtown Square.

The Pee Wee B division team completed its season, and with a young group of players, hope to build on their season next year.

The Midget B North division team finished their season with a record of 14-1-1, and secured the # 1 seed in the playoffs. The team won its preliminary playoff games against Brandywine and Prospect Park, to secure a spot in the championship game against Prospect Park. On Thursday July 1 at Central Field, Springfield took home the championship with a shutout victory against Prospect Park.

The Midget C Division squad finished its season with a record of 7-7, and secured the # 5 seed in the playoffs. The girls lost close two playoff games against teams from Media & Clifton.

The Intermediate A division team finished its season with a record of 11-2-1, and secured the # 1 seed in the playoffs. After a heartbreaking opening game loss to Prospect Park, the girls rallied to a victory against Media to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the girls lost a tough game to Drexel Hill to end their season.

SAA EDCO Intermediate

July 15 – Norwood 4 - Springfield Blue 1

In a playoff game somewhat reminiscent of the Phillies-Rays World Series Game 5, Blue started a game against Norwood on Monday night and it didn’t finish until Thursday evening. Unfortunately, there wasn’t the same happy ending for the local guys as they fell to Norwood by a score of 4-1 and were eliminated from the EDCO Intermediate semi-final playoff round. Springfield jumped out to a 1 run lead in the top of the first when lead off man Dan Hee blasted a triple over the center fielders head. Dan then scored when the cutoff man mishandled the throw into 3rd. Norwood answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st and that would be the end of the scoring until Norwood planted a final run in the 6th inning on Thursday night. Play was halted due to lightning just as Springfield was about to bat in the top of the 3rd and then the skies finally opened up and the game was suspended. Tim Finnegan pitched his heart out allowing just 2 earned runs on 4 hits but the offense was silent as Springfield only had 6 base runners on 3 hits in the game. The only other guys in the hit column for Springfield were Eric Gibbs and Pete Sabato as the final 5 innings took under an hour to play. While there was a lack of offensive production, it wasn’t due to trying hard. The entire team played with great attitude, ran hard on everything, and proved they know how to play the game the right way. Defensive highlights included a Pete Sabato putout of an attempted steal of home on a botched suicide squeeze in the 1st inning and an Eric Gibbs who gun down of a guy at 2nd attempting to steal in the 3rd inning. Finnegan had another masterful pick-off of a runner off 1st and Joe Sheeran turned an unassisted 4-3 double play when he charged hard on a grounder, got the tag out. and fired to Kyle Pappa at 1st. Despite the disappointment of not advancing to the finals, Blue can feel good about their season and look forward to next year when they will return with the majority of their players to have another crack at it.

July 13 – Norwood 5 - Springfield Blue 2
Rather then risking more delays due to rain, Springfield – Norwood elected to play game 2 of their best of 3 series on Tuesday night at Crowell Park and leave Game 1 in a suspended state to be completed later in the week. The grounds crew had their hands full but got North Ave ready to play by 6:00 PM. Norwood jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 2nd and it would prove to be all they needed as they defeated Springfield 5-2 to take the series lead. Springfield put 2 runs on the board in the bottom of 2nd when Tim Finnegan smacked a 1 out single followed by Jeff Peranteau who was safe on error on a ball he hit to third. Matt Fuchsel, 2 for 2 in the game, came up big with a 2 out single which scored Finn. Fuch aggressively advanced to second when the throw from the outfield wasn’t cut off and was just safe on a throw back from the catcher. Peranteau was heads up and seeing his opportunity, darted home on the play to steal a second run. Blue’s only other hit was off the bat of Kyle Pappa in the 5th inning. Chris Desiderio toed the rubber for Blue and he was outstanding. Desi threw 7 strong and said “I’ll throw the 8th if we tie it”. Chris scattered 8 hits with 5 K’s and only allowed 1 earned run. Defensive miscues hurt Blue along with some base running mistakes sealed their fate.

June 30 – Springfield Blue 10 – Brookhaven 0
Springfield Blue blanked Brookhaven 10-0 to close out the regular season and secure 2nd place in the EDCO Intermediate East division. Blue will battle 3rd seed Springfield Gold in the playoffs which begin on Tuesday at North Ave. Blue finished with a record of 9-7 despite a terrible start where they were 1-5 early in the season. Dedication and good attitudes by the guys accounted for the turn around. In the final game, it was all Springfield as Chris Desiderio led the way on the hill pitching 4 scoreless innings allowing just 2 hits while strking out 3. Desiderio also had an RBI single and a 2 run tripple to sew up the victory. John O’Doherty, Matt Gallo, and Danny Hee each pitched scoreless innings in relief to keep the shutout in tact. O’Doherty got into a bit of jam in the 5th with some walks but he had a nice pick-off of a man off first and was helped by a Pete Sabato gun down of a runner attempting to steal 3rd. John then struck out the final batter to end the threat. Gallo and Hee each sat them down 1-2-3 with ground outs and 2 K’s in the 6th and 7th. Tommy Lyons and Pete Sabato shared catching duties and both played great behind the plate. Offensively, Lyons had a walk, a steal, and scored a run to go along with an RBI single. Sabato had a sacrafice fly to plate a run. Danny Hee had a big game in the box as he singled, doubled, and had a RBI sacrafice fly. Matt Culbertson remained hot getting on base all three times with two walks and a single and scoring twice. Mr. Versatility, Joe Sheeran, played all 4 infield positions and had an RBI, a single, and scored two runs for Blue. Matt Gallo, knew the count when he smacked an RBI single and Chris Dougherty and Matt Fuchsel rounded out the scoring each with a stollen base and a run scored.

June 28 – Springfield Blue 3 – BYC Gold 2
Joe Sheeran pitched great in his first start of the year allowing just 2 hits and 2 runs in 7 strong innings of work. Joe struck out 4 and also started a nice 1-6-3 double play in the 5th inning to erase a lead off base runner. Joe’s battery mate, Pete Sabato, had a strong game behind the dish as he nailed 2 attempted steals. Sabato also had an RBI in the 1st when Blue got 2 runs and then later singled to lead off the 5th and eventually came around to score the winning run on a big 2 out single off the bat of Tim Houtman. Lead off man Danny Hee had 2 basehits and an important steal and run scored in the first thanks to an RBI single by John O’Doherty. Matt Culbertson was also on base twice with walk and a single while Matt Fuchsel and Chris Dougherty each had knocks.

June 27 – Norwood 11 – Springfield Blue 4
Blue fell behind early and could never really get it in gear as they fell to Norwood 11 – 4. On a postitive note, Springfield finished with 8 hits including 2 doubles. John O'Doherty was the offensive standout with a an RBI single in the 4th to plate Joe Sheeran who had doubled and then John doubled himself in the 6th to plate Chris Dougherty who had singled and Pete Sabato who was on base by error. Matt Culbertson also had a strong game with a wallk and an RBI single in the 3rd. Danny Hee, Matt Gallo, and Matt Fuchsel all hit safely in the game.
