Springfield Youth Club kicks off football season

80 pound varsity
The Springfield 80 pound varsity football team shut out the defending champions Marple Newtown Tigers by a score of 28-0 on Saturday. Jimmy Kennedy and Aidan Kreydt led the offense with back to back long runs on the opening drive of the game.  Colin Crawford sparked the offense with two touchdowns on consecutive drives.  Not to be outdone by his backfield partner, Michael O'Donnell punched in a bruising 30 yard TD to end the first half. Anchored by Patrick Keenan, Brian Minott, Marcus Puppio, Sean Dougherty and Sean Eberhardt the offensive line opened gaping holes all afternoon allowing the cougars to move the ball down the field.
The cougar defense line, led by Dylan Dyitt, Danny Flaherty and Mark Quatrani shut down any hope of a running attack by the visiting Tigers. The Cougar linebacking crew only allowed three first downs on the day.  Leading the Cougar defensive assault was Tamir Barnes, Tariq Edwards, Evan Farrington and Brian Flaherty.
Matthew Klein put a exclamation point on the day with a 25 yard TD run securing the 28-0 victory for the Cougars. The Cougars visit Aston next week and look forward to the return of Michael Hoey and Aidan Sceno.

Brian Urlacher resurfaced as #54, in the form of Colin Renning this past Sunday. Renning and the Cougars blanked the visiting Tigers in their opening season game, 25-0.
QB Riley McCarry readied his offense and directed his team behind the running attack of Brian King, Brett Gougler and Arthur Minchin.  King raced 28 yards for the game’s first touch down and the Cougars led 6-0, as the extra point failed. Late in the first quarter, Renning stripped a Tigers running back and ran the ball just short of the goal line. Renning anchored the defense, along with Jack Laverty and DJ Curtis.
In the second quarter, a King 40 yard run set up Ethan Johnson for a two yard TD plunge to make the score 13-0.  King added the extra point.  Renning (sack), Curtis and Alex Hudyma all had tackles on defense.  The Cougar backs racked up the yardage, behind the rotating mammoth offensive line of Anthony McBride, William Day, Joey Alfonsi, Robert McCarry, Danny Ryan, Logan Lennon and Nick Impriano.  A McCarry to Curtis five yard TD pass closed out the second half with the score 19-0.
In the third quarter, the Cougar defense continued to dominate, with tackles by Renning, Curtis, Eddie Cullen and Ryan.  Desperate for a score, the Tigers went to the air but Renning intercepted the pass and raced 50 yards for a defensive TD.  The extra point failed, but the Cougars up their lead to 25-0.
Stephen Graney, Curtis and Tommy Dougherty ate up the fourth quarter clock with key runs and the defense of Aidan McLane, Robert Ouelette, Matthew Shandley, Andrew Ensley, Brandon Peters, Ryan Norris and Gougler (fumble recovery) secured the shutout for the Cougars.
Next up for the Cougars are the Aston Bandits.

The Cougars kicked off the 2013 season with a decisive 12-0 victory over the always tough Tigers.  Springfield showcased their “run and gun” offense and their swarming defense.
QB Marcus McDaniel engineered the offense in the first quarter and was ably assisted by a steady diet of runs by Malik Edwards, Alex Williams and Dominick Alfonsi. The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie as the Cougar defense was led by Edwards (interception), Tommy Gabel, McDaniel and Alex Williams.
In the second quarter, McDaniel connected with James Toal for a 20 yard pass and key runs by Edwards set up a 15 yard TD run by Alfonsi.  The extra point failed but the Cougars took a 6-0 lead late into the second quarter.  Edwards second interception and a 39 yard run by McDaniel, set up a one yard TD plunge by the QB. No luck on the extra point, but the Cougars took a 12-0 lead into the half.
The Cougars defense held Marple in check in the third quarter with tackles by Nicky Cariola, Edwards, Alex Sciarrino, Chris Rich and Alfonsi. The running backs continued to pile up yardage behind the dominating rotating offensive line of Toal, Cariola, Jake Eden, Gabel, Chris Impriano, Robbie O’Brien, Rich, Matt Ellison, Cole Rhoades, Danny Tommarelli and Michael Leon.
The fourth quarter was a continuation of the Cougars manhandling defense directed by Matt Dickinson, Impriano, O’Brien, Ellison, Eden, Rhoades, Matt Gagliardi and Sciarrino.  The clock ran out and the Cougars had their first shutout of the season.
Next week the Cougars travel to Aston to battle the Bandits.

The SYC 80lb Gold team hosted the Marple 1 team early Saturday morning but no hospitality was shown to the visitors as Springfield struck early and often on offense and played a flawless defensive game.
Marple won the coin toss, and that was the end of their highlight reel.  Springfield’s defense, made up of Josh Crowther, Ryan Farrington, Vinny DeBerardo, Gavin Dawson, Bradyn Reger, Ben Kutufaris and Christopher McGinnis, allowed only three first downs in the entire game . Standout tackles were made by Lucas Aaron, Nate Moran, Daniel White, Michael Turner, Vinny Valerio, Jonathon Huston, Bobby Marker and Andrew Rechner.
Springfield’s offensive running game was fierce thanks to the gridlock blocking provided by Kyle Collins, Jimmy McGinnis, Ryan Johnston, Michael Vickerman, Daniel Toal, Madison McBride, Ryan Holden, Vincent Califano, Connor Aughe and Anthony Micelli.
Luke Biancaniello had a season’s worth of highlights in just one game with nine carries, totaling 152 yards, including three touchdowns.  Ty Gougler had seven carries for a total of 38 yards including one touchdown.  Final score Springfield 24, Marple 0.
Springfield will next play Haverford on Sept. 7.
