Penncrest Middle School ice hockey wins championship after undefeated season

The Penncrest Middle School non-check ice hockey team went 18-0-2 this season, remaining undefeated throughout the regular season and playoffs.

Penncrest knocked off Ridley M.S. in the best of three championship series winning game one, 6-3, and game two, 4-1, to clinch the Delco School League Championship at Ice Works Thursday night (3/15). It was Penncrest's first ever undefeated season.

Brookhaven U12 basketball wins Del Val championship

Brookhaven basketball U12 Del Val team won the Del Val Championship at Academy Park High School on March 11. Delco League Playoffs
Springfield Gold 8, Haverford 4
The Gold squad opened up its playoff schedule with a tough matchup against Haverford. The Fords came out fast and jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Things looked grim for the Cougars until they got two clutch goals off the stick of Austin Bush to tie the game at 2-2.
From there Ryan Kertis took over, scoring five goals to boost the Cougars to a commanding lead.
The Cougars got tough two-way play from Adam Baumann, Franny Doerr and Matthew Shandley throughout the game.
Johnny Carafa, Riley Garrison and Shane Knoell played stingy defense to frustrate their rival.
Johnny McCormick and Dylan Bush were buzzing around the net all night and the Cougars leading scorer, Aidan Shandley, was brilliant at both ends of the ice making his usual contribution with a goal and three assists.
The game puck went to goaltender Brett Barber who stopped 25 shots.
Ridley 9, Springfield Gold 4
The following night the Gold Cougars faced off against Ridley for the Delco League Elementary Championship. The Cougars may have been a little nervous on the big stage as they spotted Ridley an early 3-0 lead.
Again things looked rough until Johnny McCormick knocked in an Aidan Shandley centering pass to get the Cougars on the board.
The talented Ridley Raiders kept coming and got two more quick goals to go up 5-1. Early in the second period the Cougars woke like a sleeping giant. They stormed back with two goals from Shandley and another from Ryan Kertis to cut the deficit to 5-4 in the middle of the third period.
Brett Barber was solid in the pipes as the Cougars tightened up defensively with excellent play from Matthew Shandley, Shane Knoell and Johnny Carafa.
The speedy Bush brothers (Austin and Dylan) and youngsters Franny Doerr, Riley Garrison and Adam Baumann kept the heat coming at the Ridley net but the Raiders staved off the Cougar comeback and eventually got four goals late to take the victory.
The Cougars played their hearts out under coaches Tony Barber, Steve Knoell and Chris Shandley, and left it all on the ice. They took home medals and some hardware for their outstanding season-long efforts.

Springfield Athletic Association U12 boys take DelVal Title

Springfield 47, Lansdowne 46
Springfield U12 boys’ basketball team won the DelVal Championship on March 11 at Academy Park High School. After beating Chester 49-34 in the Semi-finals, the boys had a championship in sight. They knew they had tough game ahead of them. It was an exciting finish to a great season.
After going 2-1 against Lansdowne during the regular season, the boys had to bring their A game. The entire game was a battle.
Tommy Toal lead the Cougars in scoring with 14 points. Kyle Long and Justin Collins both put up 10 points. Greg Tamaccio and Trevor Robinson had four points each, and Dave Bingaman had two.
Jason Estep's game-winning three-pointer with five seconds left in the game put the Cougars up by one. A turn over by Lansdowne put the Cougars in control with three second left. After a quick, clean inbounds play by Tamaccio to Toal, the boys stormed the court in celebration.

Marple Newtown boys 4 x 800 relay team wins gold at Delco championships

The Marple Newtown High School boys’ 4 x 800 relay team recently took first place at the Delco Championships. The team (seen above, from left) is Matt Moore, Brian Landi, Coach Vince Clarke, Andrew Wyschynskyj and Matt Sweeney.

BYC U11 girls' basketball completes perfect season

The BYC U11 girls completed a perfect season going, 19-0. The 5th grade team competed in the 6th grade Malvern league where they went 10-0 for the season. The girls capped off their season winning Championships in both the Aston and Ridley Tournaments.

Basketball Skills Contest, Saturday, March 10

The Optimist Club of Havertown is sponsoring a basketball skills contest for boys and girls ages 8 - 13 on Saturday, March 10, beginning at 1 p.m., in the gym at Sacred Heart School (Wilson Avenue and Manoa Road - off of West Chester Pike). Bailey Park Basketball for Girls registration

BAILEY PARK BASKETBALL FOR GIRLS was established to give girls in grades kindergarten through 7 the opportunity to learn and play basketball in Haverford Township. The league runs from mid-April to early June and consists of at least one game per week with no practices. The emphasis for the younger girls is on learning the fundamentals of the game and learning to play the game. For older girls, the League affords them an opportunity to keep playing games after their school season has ended.
