Brookline recently completed their playoffs with the Bandits, the 5th place regular season team claiming the Championship over the Force, the 2nd place team. Brookline Baseball and Softball work hard to assure parody in their leagues. The Major Girls are certainly no exception. “It felt like every playoff game was any team’s game to win” commented Major Girls Commissioner Bill Gormley.
The Glory, coached by Drew Murphy, the Pride coached by Mike Romano, and the Racers coached by Dave Spadaro were capable teams that just didn’t get the breaks to go their way during the playoffs. The Racers for example were knocked out of the tournament with 2 losses by a total of 3 runs. Again this speaks to the Brookline organization’s desire to keep the teams equally talented. “Across all of our Leagues Minor Girls and Boys, and Major Girls and Boys, all playoff games were closely contested games” said Rich Buxton, Brookline President.
The playoff system is a double elimination tournament. The Bandits path to the Championship was in the 4, 5 seed game they defeated the Glory. In the game against the top seeded Racers, they won another closely contested. Their win over the Force placed the Bandits one win away from the Championship.
The Force, coached by Mike Epstien, defeated the Pride, lost to the Bandits, and defeated the Racers in the bracket for teams that have lost one game in the double elimination tournament. The Force’s task was to defeat the Bandits twice, and the crown was theirs.
The Bandits won a closely contested well played game by a 6 - 4 margin for the Championship. “This was a total team effort throughout the regular season and playoffs. Every player had an opportunity to make a contribution to the team“, stated Jack Cunningham, Bandits Manager. Members of the winning Bandits are: Kayla Bassett, Lauren Vanstone, Jamie Falcone, Tiffany Cunningham, Alisha Mooney, Kelly Brady, Julia Roseneau, Sara Nelson, Gretchen Keown, Courtney Monahan, Amanda Stutman, Caroline Freels, and Julie Cohen.
