Springfield CYO football ups record to 3-0

SFA Junior Varsity SFA 18, St. Joseph 0 The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team blanked St. Joseph of Aston 18-0 at Church Road Field on Sept. 25. SFA is 3-0 on the season.
SFA jumped out of the starting blocks quickly by scoring on two of their first three offensive plays.Johnny Powers set up the first score by returning the opening kickoff 25 yards. Nicky Kutufaris then bolted for touchdown runs of 28 and 14 yards, with key blocks provided by Cole Dumont, Tommy Kutufaris, Mike Conran and Powers.Both extra point attempts failed and the first quarter came to a close with SFA on top 12-0.
That would be the extent of the scoring in the first half, although SFA had a long touchdown run nullified late in the second quarter.
SFA tacked on their final touchdown in the fourth quarter by driving 50 yards in eight plays.Quarterback Liam McKnight snuck into the end zone from a yard out to complete the drive and the scoring at 18-0.
SFA’s defense pitched their third consecutive shutout, allowing only one first down and forcing two turnovers.Leading tacklers were Justin Shields, Marty O’Connell, Adam Klein, Connor Crawford, Derek Strain, Dumont, Powers, Conran, Patrick Divine, Alex Smith and N. Kutufaris.N. Kutufaris recorded an interception and Shields recovered a fumble.
SFA travels to Drexel Hill to take on St. Bernadette this Saturday at noon.
