The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth and sixth grade football team bounced back from an error-plagued loss to Holy Cross the week before by playing flawlessly and routing St. Katherine 26-0. SFA raised its record to 3-2.
SFA received the opening kickoff and proceeded to consume the entire first quarter with a thirteen-play drive that unfortunately bogged down at St. Katherine’s 13-yard line. However, the defense held on downs, and seven plays later Joe Carpenter raced off tackle from three yards out for a score. The extra point attempt failed, but SFA was on top 6-0.
SFA held on defense once again, and with only a minute remained in the half, Luke Sprague connected with Carpenter on a 62-yard touchdown bomb. Jack McCarry booted the extra point and the half ended with SFA leading 14-0.
SFA put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a nine-play, 64-yard scoring drive. Pat Clemens rushed for 31 one of those yards, including a one-yard touchdown burst up the middle. The extra point attempt failed and the third quarter came to a close with SFA leading 20-0.
SFA tacked on its final touchdown in the fourth quarter when Dale Lennon swept 35 yards around end into the end zone to complete the scoring at 26-0.
SFA gained 151 yards on the ground and 82 yards through the air for a total of 233 yards.  Linemen Chris Ringwalt, James Kutufaris, Tommy Cresta, Jack Carpenter, Joe McCallig, Andrew Franks, Jonathan Mears and Cole Sprague controlled the line of scrimmage.
SFA’s defense recorded its third shutout of the season. Leading tacklers were Kutufaris, Clemens, C. Sprague, L. Sprague, Joe Carpenter, Dale Lennon, Jack Carpenter and Mears. Joe Carpenter and Kutufaris both recorded interceptions.
SFA will host St. Gabriel on Homecoming Saturday at Church Road Field. The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with the varsity game.

Holy Cross 21
St Denis 19

Holy Cross (HC) continued its undefeated streak by defeating St. Denis 21-19 in a hard fought game.
St Denis scored early but HC answered back quickly. Quarterback Patrick Toal's screen pass to Zach Broomall, who ran 35 yards, put Cross in scoring position. Broomall then scored and Anthony Rightley's extra point put Cross ahead 7-6.
Explosive running from Ian Deal and Jaden Boswell continued to rack up yards.
Toal's 20-yard pass to Stephen Di Battista put Cross back in the red zone. Boswell ran it in for a touchdown, and Rightley did the same for the point putting the Crusaders back on top 14-12.
Rightley's 30-yard run expanded the lead to 21-12.
The Big O line consisting of Ryan Rockenbach, Nick Faraglia, James Ennis, Dom Addona Di Battista, Deal and Broomall continues to open holes.
Defensively, three game saving tackles by Ryan Reger, Tommy O'Neill, and Boswell helped secure the game.
HC will celebrate Homecoming Sunday against St. Dots.
