Springfield's CYO football wins season opener

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team opened the 2011 season with a 27-0 victory over St. Patrick of Malvern on a sun splashed Saturday morning at Cardinal O’Hara High School.
The first half featured three special team scores for SFA. Nicky Kutufaris returned the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown, and Mike Conran reached the end zone twice with punt returns of 62 and 60 yards. Conran booted an extra point, and SFA led 20-0 at half time.
Neither team was able to generate any offense in the third quarter and the starters were done for the day.
In the fourth quarter, SFA tacked on their final touchdown when Joe Carpenter raced 21 yards around end. James Kutufaris darted off tackle for the extra point and the scoring was complete at 27-0.
SFA’s defense recorded a shutout and allowed only two first downs. Leading tacklers were Justin Shields, Derek Strain, Marty O'Connell, Tommy Kutufaris, Cole Dumont, Patrick Devine and Johnathan Mears. O'Connell also recovered a fumble.
Members of this year’s team include Ryan Calderaro, Sean Carney, Carpenter, Conran, Danny Cox, Connor Crawford, Thomas Cresta, Ryan Culp, Devine, Dumont, Colin Eberhardt, Mark Finley, Andrew Franks, Connor Hoffner, Gabe Jasinski, Adam Klein, J. Kutufaris, Dale Lennon, Timothy Lorenz, Jack McCarry, Liam McKnight, Bob McTeague, Mears, O'Connell, John Powers, Chris Ringwalt, Anthony Scarduzio, Nicholas Schneider, Shields, Alex Smith, Luke Sprague and Strain.
