The Springfield U10 team beat Brookhaven 23-18. Patrick Marley Jr. led scoring with six points, Patrick Toal scored five points, Cole Sprague and Liam McGuire both had four points, Kevin Duffy and Owen Sheenan both had two points.
Great defensive playing by Jack McCarry, Colin Hopkins, Patrick McCann, Tanner Robinson and Chris Ringwalt. Great game by all the boys working the ball well to the inside and playing very aggressive.

The Springfield U12 team continued their undefeated season by beating Folcroft 33-21 on Sunday.
Great offensive and defensive playing by all the boys. The boys are 11-0 this season. They hope to continue their winning streak this weekend when they play Chichester on Sunday.

E.T. Richardson girls' basketball play continues

The E.T. Richardson Middle School girls’ basketball team swept two league opponents to improve their record to 11-1 on the season. The team continues to play well at both ends of the floor as they look to end their season on a high note.

The team traveled to the Panthers floor for their first and only meeting of the year and came away with a hard- fought victory.
The host Panthers packed their defense into a 2-3 zone to negate the Cougar’s height advantage. This strategy kept the host in the game for the first quarter.
Amanda Hopkins scored two points as she drove down the lane for two of her six points in the game. Maggie O’Connell also scored from the outside as the teams traded baskets in a lack luster effort by the Cougars.
The second quarter saw the real Cougars arrive as they went on a 16-3 second quarter run. Jill Condon was sensational as she scored four points and swiped six rebounds in the quarter alone.
Bridget Whitaker continued to make things happen with her hustle. Whitaker scored four points while causing chaos for the Panthers on offense.
Colleen Culbertson continued to play well at both ends of the floor. She led all scorers with eight points. Stephanie Mc Cann closed out the scoring as she muscled her way in the paint for a put back to give her team a commanding 20-7 advantage at the half.
The second half saw the teams trade baskets. Hopkins dominated, scoring four points. Mackenzie Schott knocked down a perimeter jump shot. Schott’s ball handling has been a nice addition to her team as she has scored, passed and played great defense.
Gianna Zulli and Courtney Clark combined to haul in six rebounds to limit the ’Haven squad from making a dent in the Cougars’ advantage. Bailey O’Brien and Erika Biehlalso contributed as they assisted on their teams scores in the second half.

The Cougars traveled to Springton Lake for their second meeting of the year. In earlier action, the Cougars led 30-0 before allowing six late points in their first game of the year.
The host Lions came to play the second time as they battled the Cougars to a 9-4 first quarter deficit. Amanda Hopkins was unstoppable as she led all scorers in the game with ten points. Hopkins scored seven in the first quarter alone to carry her team.
Jamie Brower also played well, adding seven points in the game, including the first basket of the game. Mackenzie Schott and Maggie O’Connell played solid defense while being kept off the score sheet due to the hosts excessive fouling.
In second quarter the Cougars doubled their advantage. Bailey O’Brien played her best game of the year as she scored six points and was a force at both ends. Jill Condon contributed a mid-range shot and Kiley Fasy hit from outside to add to the advantage. The half ended with the Cougars leading 17-8.
The Cougars played their best basketball of the year in the third quarter as they erupted for 16 points. Bridget Whitaker ignited this run with her steals while scoring eight third quarter points.
Brower and Hopkins scored the ball as they combined for eight points in the quarter. Ginna Zulli and Courtney Clark added a defensive presence in the second half as they forced the Lakers into numerous turnovers.
Colleen Culbertson continued her nice stretch of scoring as she hit a three point play to close out the scoring and lead her team to their 11th win of the year.

The Springfield Gold Cougars returned to action in the Delco Elementary League, Jan. 23, against a smooth skating Snipers team. And the short-staffed Cougars were up to the task.
Team leaders Aidan Shandley (five goals) and Johnny McCormick (one goal, two assists) gave the Snipers netminder fits all night. Brett Barber was solid in the pipes and Franny Doerr, Shane Knoell and Austin Bush helped clear the decks in front with tough defensive play.
Youngsters Matthew Shandley and Adam Baumann logged plenty of valuable ice time up front to neutralize the Snipers attack. And despite a slow start and a short bench, the Cougars cruised to a commanding 6-3 victory.

The Cougars followed up their Snipers victory with a tough match against Haverford. Emotions were high and the Cougars played a superb game at both ends of the ice.
The tough defensive play of Shane Knoell, Franny Doerr and Austin Bush has become the trademark of the young Cougars.
Dylan Bush, Riley Garrison, Johnny Carafa and Matthew Shandley played stellar two-way hockey, giving Haverford all they could handle on the offensive end and bottling up their opponent time after time in the defensive zone.
Brett Barber continued his dominance in net allowing only one goal on over 30 shots. The Cougars got goals from Ryan Kertis, Aidan Shandley and Johnny McCormick as they clawed their way to another tough victory.
The Gold Cougars find themselves at the top of the Delco League with a 10-2 record powered by their outstanding goaltending and defensive team play. They will take a short hiatus before play resumes next week.

In a battle of the top two teams in the league, the Cougars fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as they dropped a decision to the Northley Vikings, 28-21. In a game the Cougars never led, the team battled until the final buzzer.
ETR struggled from the field as they shot 22 percent in the first half and dug an early hole. Amanda Hopkins and Maggie O’Connell would each score five points to lead their team in scoring.
The Cougars scored a season low five first half points as they trailed 8-5 at the halfway point. The Vikings were led by Kate Lannon’s 17 points in the game as she deposited seven of her ten free trips to the foul line.
The second half saw the teams trade baskets as Jamie Brower worked hard for a put back and O’Connell got on the board with a driving drop shot.
The game started to heat up as each team scored more points in the third quarter then the first half. Bridget Whitaker, Stephanie McCann and Kiley Fasy would play stellar defense as the visiting Cougars tried to claw their way back into the game.
The fourth quarter saw the Cougars get within three points in the early going. McConnell knocked down a three, which was followed by two Jill Condon baskets to make the game interesting.
Gianna Zulli and Bailey O’Brien converted passes into baskets to pressure the hosts.
With the tide turning toward the Cougars, Lannon closed the door with five consecutive points to keep the Cougars at bay.
Mackenzie Schott and Jill Kane had chances late to score but the rim had other ideas as they rolled out.
The team learned a valuable lesson in defeat that when they play as a team good things tend to happen.

In a key league match, the Fords traveled to the friendly confines of the Cougar Cage and left with their second loss of the season.
Both teams entered the game with a single loss each to Northley. Game ten for both teams was a battle for second place in the league standings.
The Cougars bounced back from a tough loss to take a convincing ninth win of the year. The Cougars took an early 7-4 first quarter lead as Amanda Hopkins was dominant throughout.
Hopkins led her team with nine points but was only one of nine from the charity stripe. Jamie Brower contributed as she deposited a Hopkins miss into gold with a nice rebound. Colleen Culbertson scored from outside as her shooting touch has become a team strength.
The second quarter saw the hosts take a commanding 13-4 advantage as Mackenzie Schott scored from the wing and Kiley Fasy scored from the perimeter.
The Fords would not go quietly and scored ten consecutive second quarter points to take a 14-13 advantage into the half.
The third quarter saw an offensive explosion by the blue and gold. The team went back to what they do best, share the ball.
O’Connell knocked down two long range jump shots which were both set up by the team’s excellent passing.
Hopkins then took over as she dominated the paint with two driving baskets. Bridget Whitaker also got in the scoring column on a nice drive to the basket to give her team a six point advantage.
The fourth quarter continued to see the Cougar’s depth as an asset as all 12 players contributed to the victory.
Stephanie McCann and Courtney Clark played tough physical defense as the Fords were limited to a shot each time down the floor. Jill Condon added four key rebounds late in the game to seal the Fords fate.
O’Connell knocked down four consecutive foul shots to seal the team’s key win. Gianna Zulli and Erika Biehl played well at both ends.

St. Francis JV continues move toward Regional CYO playoffs

The St. Francis ninth- and tenth-grade squad is moving towards the Regional CYO playoffs like a well-oiled machine, as evidenced by their 61 to 50 win over previously unbeaten Katherine Drexel.
This fine young team moved their overall record to 12 and 2 with this win against a high-quality, extremely offensive minded opponent.
When playing Drexel, one had better be ready to “run” and SFA certainly proved to be up to the task, led by Kevin George with 19, Ben Clausen with 17, and Kevin McKnight with 14. George literally “ran a clinic” from the point guard position in this game in leading the St. Francis charge.
The green and gold was also outstanding defensively, led by superior defensive play by Luke Reichert.
Besides piling up the points at the offensive end, George, Clausen and McKnight were also stellar at the defensive end, chipping in with numerous blocks and steals in this impressive victory.

Defense was most definitely the undoing of the varsity Bruins as they fell to Katherine Drexel by a score of 71 to 65.
Coach Milt Hedrick noted this team has had a difficult time getting a full squad of players out for key practices, and it certainly showed in this game.
In spite of the loss, Eric Pollock and Nick Santana were outstanding for St. Francis in this game, registering 22 and 18 points respectively. Jeff Peranteau tallied 12.

Springfield Elementary Blue continued to show their dominance with a decisive win versus archrival Penncrest last week. Team scoring leader Jayson Francis started the scoring with two goals assisted by Mikey Ahern and Ryan O’Connor. Ronan Plummer recorded the next two goals for a 4 - 0 lead after the first period.
In the second period, the defense led by Conor Rysak and Dara Campo frustrated the Penncrest attack by not allowing them to skate into the center of the ice. Finn Plummer recorded the first goal of his career with the help of emerging stars Scottie Francis and Devin DeStefano. Goalie Luca DiMarcantonio recorded another win with the help of rising defensive stars Eric Agans and Justin Beaky.
This team shows no signs of letting up as they march towards the playoffs.

St. Mary Magdalen CYO Hawks win Region 25 championship

St. Mary Magdalen CYO sixth grade Hawks soccer team scored nine wins and had just one loss during the regular season to end in first place prior to the playoffs. The team scored a total of 40 goals against their opponents and only allowed six goals against them.

With 21 players, 16 different players scored during the regular season. Dan Morrow came through as a top ranked goalie, even stopping a penalty shot during the St Pius game.

In the playoffs, the team’s defense went into high gear. Coaches Rennie and Buttimer could be heard saying, "goals win games but defense wins championships" and that proved to be the case.

The quarterfinal playoff game was held at Bonner. On a frosty AstroTurf field, SMM beat Sacred Heart, 4-0, with the first goal delivered by Delanie Rennie and additional goals scored by Spencer Panzo with two and Declan Buttimer.

The semifinal game was also held at Bonner against a tough St. Bernie's team. SMM would come out on top again, 3-0, with goals scored by Spencer Panzo, Ava Leonhardt, and John Curran.

The championship game was held at Bonner under the lights. Thomas the Apostle played a tough game, keeping the score tied, 0-0, at halftime. Coaches Rennie and Buttimer made a strategic offensive change by placing PJ Barker at midfield and Joseph Hassey in at defense. Minutes into the second half, Barker scored the first goal of the game and the place went wild. A few minutes later, Ava Leonhardt scored the second goal. The Hawks won by a final score of 2-0.

The Hawks continued their strong soccer program and were named this year's Region 25 Champions.

Locals lead Mesa Fresh lax to national championship

The Mesa Fresh 2014 lacrosse team claimed gold in the U17 ‘Rising Stars’ division of the Dick’s Tournament of Champions in Wesley Chapel, Florida over the New Years weekend. Mesa Fresh entered the playoff action as the number nine seed and qualified for the finals with wins over (then) top-seeded New Westminster (Canada), 13-1, and Utah Starz, 11-4, before defeating the Baltimore Breakers, 10-5, in the semifinals.

In the finals, Mesa Fresh faced Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Though they fell behind national power FCA, 4-0, early in the title game, strong defensive and offensive efforts as well as outstanding goaltending allowed Mesa Fresh to rally for a come-from-behind win to capture the tournament championship.

Mesa Fresh head coach Pat Carney stated that his team actually benefited from losing its opening match to Carolina Light in overtime.

“It was a good wake-up call for us,” said Carney. “We went from playing the wrong way to playing the right way. After that loss we got better and better every game. After the overtime loss, the kids realized they needed to play ver unselfish lacrosse. They really came together and played as a team. Even when thing weren’t going our way – and we were losing 4-0 in both the semis and finals – we played like warriors. We played great team ball and our goalies came up big when we needed them. They helped us gain the momentum.”

Coach Carney, his son, Tucker, and teammate Kevin Murphy are all natives of Strath Haven. Following the championship game, Mesa Fresh goalie Bryce Womack (Perkiomen Valley) was named MVP, making six saves in the second half of the championship game.

“It was a total team effort,” coach Carney said. “Nobody was concerned about stats or goals or assists. It was just, ‘How can we win and come together?’ We had very good and high quality possessions and waited for high quality shots. They played very unselfishly and used high paced ball movement. We also had great team defense. Everyone helped and our slides were good; they played very physical defense and responded to every challenge in front of them.

High school and youth amateur baseball coaches will receive useful information to benefit their programs from successful local collegiate and professional coaches at the 2012 WinningTeam Baseball Coaches Clinic on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Science and Discovery High School in Chester.

The clinic will also feature a community service component, discuss coaching ethics and sports culture, and gauge coaches for youth athlete protection needs. Registration is only $25 through January 15 and $35 thereafter. Teams that register 4 or more coaches per team are eligible for a 20% clinic registration discount. The E.T. Richardson’s seventh-grade girls’ basketball team opened its season with three consecutive league wins. The team consists of 14 highly-skilled girls who are looking to continue to improve as players. The team is averaging 32 points per game while limiting its opponents to single digits.

The Cougars jumped out to a commanding 12-point first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Jamie Brower was dominant in the paint as she recorded six first-quarter points,benefited from some excellent passes by Mackenzie Schott. The backcourt of Maggie O’Connell and Jill Kane combined for 11 points as the game was decided by halftime with the Cougars firmly in control 15-0.
The inside play of Amanda Hopkins with four points and Jill Condon with two points kept the offense rolling. Springton Lake had difficulty with the size advantage of the Cougar frontline throughout the game. More than half of the team’s points came from the lane as Stephanie McCann would chip in with a basket while playing stellar defense.
The balance of scoring was evident as eight players scored points of the 12 that played. Bridget Whitaker and Kiley Fasy would also find the bottom of the net as the team led 30-0 entering the final quarter. Courtney Clark and Erika Biehl hustled at both ends of the floor while also having opportunities to score. Bailey O’Brien was a burst of energy coming off the bench sparking her team to two easy baskets after tracking down two loose balls for teammate’s points.

The team traveled to Beverly Hills, Dec. 19, and left with an easy victory over the hospitable Bears. The balanced scoring by the Cougars was evident as 10 players scored the ball. Mackenzie Schott and Jamie Brower led their team with six points each. Colleen Culbertson led the offense as she started the game at point guard. Culbertson dished three assists while not having a turnover in the game. She also hit two outside jump shots to spark her team to a 21-2 first-half advantage.
Jill Condon and Stephanie McCann scored early as they dominated the inside play. Jamie Brower and Gianna Zulli muscled inside as they combined to score 10 points, all from in the paint. The team was led once again by the passing game as Jill Kane and Bailey O’Brien continued to find their open teammates for open looks. This dynamic duo each scored four points and played excellent defense. Kiley Fasy and Erika Biehl came off the bench to spark their team to an 8-0 third-quarter run that would put the game out of reach. They hit on three of their four shots taken. Bridget Whitaker and Courtney Clark did what they do best -- cause havoc for their opposition. These two teammates combined for four steals and six rebounds to limit the Bears offensively.
The team continues to improve as they have developed a positive chemistry on the floor.

The high-flying Cougars jumped out to a commanding 13-point lead as they declawed the Falcons from Drexel Hill. Jill Kane and Maggie O’Connell set the tone as they scored off of the tip to register the first basket in three seconds. The starting backcourt combined for 10 points all within the first quarter of play. The visiting Falcons fell behind by eight points before taking a shot. Jamie Brower was, again, a force inside as she scored five points to lead her team in the paint. Courtney Clark had her best shooting day of the season as she led her team with seven points. Clark’s hard work at practice paid off for her team in the scoring column.
The Cougars lead advancedin the second quarter to 20-2 as Bailey O’Brien and Colleen Culbertson knocked down two outside shots.
Amanda Hopkins also chipped in with a basket as the rout was on its way. Stephanie McCann and Gianna Zulli combined to haul in seven rebounds as the Drexel Hill squad was over-matched inside. Mackenzie Schott would do what she does best -- setting up her teammates for easy baskets. Schott assisted on two baskets while recording two steals.
Kiley Fasy and Erika Biehl led their team in the hustle department as they played outstanding defense, while also having chances to score. The team cruised to its third consecutive victory and look to make things happen in the highly competitive league.

Garney Valley youth help Spirit United U12 Sol win championship

On Nov. 19, the Spirit United Soccer Club U12 “Sol” finished the 2011 Fall season as Delco Soccer League Division 1 Champions.

Garnet Valley boys on the team include Nate Antignani and Kenan Wursthorn. This tremendous achievement capped off a phenomenal year for the Sol which started in the spring winning the Jefferson Cup in Virginia, a top ranked national tournament.

More success followed as the team won the Eastern Pennsylvania Turkey Hill Challenge Cup (state champions) and were finalists in the highly ranked FC Delco Players Cup in May. In the midst of all this, the team expanded from 8-on-8 to 11-on-11 at U12 which ultimately added six new players to the Sol’s roster.

The Sol kicked off its summer medley of tournaments as Finalists at the West Chester Summer Classic, losing only to penalty kicks. They also played their first international match at the Spirit Kick-Off Classic XXV in August. The Sol concluded the summer as Finalists at the Keystone Cup in Lancaster.

In September, the Sol began Delco Soccer league play in Division 1 by beating the PA Classics, winner of the Keystone Cup. Division 1 of the Delco Soccer League is arguably one of the most competitive soccer leagues in the nation with seven out the eleven U12 teams nationally ranked on Got Soccer’s top 25 list.

The Sol team is currently ranked by Got Soccer at #10 in the nation which is no small feat since there are over 1.5 million boys affiliated with US Youth Soccer. In fact, the Delco Soccer League has 8 Divisions, with Division 1 being the premier, sporting over 81 travel teams at the U12 boys age group alone, a testament to the love of soccer in this area.

This year, Delco Division 1 attracted teams from all over the region including Maryland and Delaware which is nothing new to the Sol who compete with teams as far away as Canada and Ohio as well as those closer to home such as New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

In the Delco regular season, the Sol team went 7-1-2 which earned them a coveted second place seed in the Delco Playoffs. The Sol’s first playoff game was against Fewster, ranked #1 in the nation, who the Sol beat for the 2nd time in 7 days. This key playoff win led the Sol to the Finals game against the West Chester United Predators who always offer tough competition.

The Sol was up 1-0 early in the 1st half when forward, Kenan Wursthorn, scored a 2nd goal from about 15 yards. Speaking of his goal, Kenan said, “My teammate passed me the ball. I saw an opening through the defense to the left corner of the net, and I just let it rip. I knew the goal keeper could not reach the ball and it was going in.”

With a solid performance in the midfield by Nate Antignani, the Sol finished 3-1 at the end of the championship match. Coach Ciaran Barrett remarked that it was the total effort that each member of team put forward all season that resulted in the Sol being named the 2011 Delco U12 Division 1 Champions.

This Spirit United team is not your typical community travel team; based in Downingtown, its success has drawn boys from all over Eastern Pennsylvania including Garnet Valley and as far away as Hamburg, PA. In fact, most of the team travels well over 45 minutes, each way, to attend training. The boys and their families are dedicated to the development of their soccer skills.

All members of the team are active in one or more elite soccer organizations which provide high level instruction to supplement team training. These groups include the Union Juniors, Olympic Development Program (ODP) and Fusion Futures. In most cases, the aspiring soccer player must be invited just to tryout and the competition for limited spots is fierce.

The Sol team is well known in coaching circles, and often the Sol team is requested as a “demonstration” team for coaching training and licensing. In addition, many of the Sol boys opt to attend one or more summer camps during the team break in June which provide for all day soccer training from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

While the team does require the full commitment of its players and parents, the team has time for fun, as well, whether that be a team bowling party, goofing off with Nerf soccer balls between tournament games or their annual holiday party.

The success of the Spirit United U12 Boys Sol soccer team can be attributed to Coach Ciaran Barrett’s hard work, perseverance, learning, sacrifice, and love for the players and for the game of soccer.

Coach Barrett, a former local player as well as collegiate athlete and professional player, understands what is required to succeed in this growing sport. He is praised by the Sol parents for his dedication, commitment, knowledge, and enthusiasm. Most notably, his demeanor and actions set a positive example that the boys can admire.

To promote mental and emotional self growth, Barrett provided each player their own journal to write in each week. The boys record their thoughts about training, games, or other areas of their life that affect them as soccer players.

Also, Barrett provides detailed game reports with individual player and team feedback stating areas of strength and areas for improvement. These game reports are a valuable tool in helping to develop the players and team. It is evident that Ciaran has far exceeded his responsibility as coach to impact, teach and guide the team.

With 2011 coming to a close, the team will continue training on a weekly basis and ramp back up in the Spring in preparation for their next big challenge – the EPYSA State Cup to defend their status as state champions!

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) ninth and 10th graders opened the 2011 -2012 season with an impressive win over St. Dot’s A team.
Ben Clausen and Colin Ringwalt led the way for the green and gold with 11 points apiece. Kevin McKnight chipped in with eight and Andrew Peranteau tallied seven.
The Bruins jumped out to a 12-5 first-quarter lead, and they expanded it to 26-13 by the half, never being threatened in this game by their rivals from Township Line.

It was just one of those nights as the SFA JV Bruins improved their record to 2 and 0 with a decisive 29-point win over OLPH.
Blistering out to a 15-5 first-quarter lead, SFA rolled to an easy win in this contest. Coach Milt Hedrick commented on the great play of Andrew Peranteau who “was outstanding and is really starting to understand his game.” Peranteau tallied six points with 10 assists and eight rebounds.
The SFA scoring was led by Kevin McKnight with 12, followed by Ben Clausen and Joe Travagline with eight apiece.

It was a real barnburner at the St. Francis gym as the hosts fell to their cross-town rivals from Holy Cross by a point.
Besides the kids from both squads giving their all on the court, this game featured two former players as coaches for each team who should be well remembered by Springfield SFA-Holy Cross fans. Young Zach Myers is coaching Holy Cross, and Alex Yuravage is an assistant to long-time St. Francis head-man Milt Hedrick.
This was a tough loss for the green and gold. Holy Cross led throughout, by as much as 12 points, but St. Francis was diligent, coming to within the last shot of winning the game.
The Bruin’s Ben Clausen led all scorers with 17 points, and he also tallied eight rebounds against the tough, athletic Holy Cross squad. Hard-nosed SFA point-guard Kevin George also was outstanding, tallying 10 points for the Bruins.

SFA opened its 2011-2012 campaign with a solid win at home against Holy Cross. According to Coach Milt Hedrick, this game was “over early” as the green and gold scurried out to a 41-10 halftime lead and never looked back.
Eight different players tallied points for SFA in, led by Matt Reichert with 18. Jeff Peranteau and Mike Dougherty tallied 12 apiece, and Nick Santana had eight. Eric Pollock and John Ciurlino helped control the boards with seven and six rebounds, respectively.

The Varsity Bruins started off slowly and never fully recovered before falling to St. Dot’s.
In spite of the fact that this team has had very little time to practice as a team, Coach Hedrick sees great potential for this squad once “they get their basketball legs.”
Jeff Peranteau turned in another outstanding game for the Bruins, tallying 14 points, six rebounds and eight assists.
Another key player was Eric Pollock with three points and five boards. John Ciurlino and Nick Cahill turned in five apiece. John Oakley had six and Pat O’Connell had three.

Nether United Palominos win Columbia Fall Classic in dramatic fashion

The Nether United U14G Palominos based in Delaware County traveled to Columbia MD the weekend of Nov 19th/20th to compete in the Columbia Fall Classic tournament. After stringing together 3 convincing wins versus Montgomery Soccer Club, DC Stoddard United and FC Frederick to qualify for the championship game; the Palominos faced the Baltimore Bays and led the game in the closing minutes.

But the Baltimore Bays tied the game at 2-2 in the closing seconds of the championship game and the game went to penalty kicks (PKs) where the Palominos won in dramatic fashion with three successful PKs and two outstanding saves by the Palomino’s keeper which bested the Baltimore’s efforts.

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth and sixth grade football team converted all three first half offensive possessions into scores and shut down Holy Cross 19-0 at Scullion Field on a gorgeous Thanksgiving Day to conclude a 9-3 season.
SFA received the opening kickoff and proceeded to march 77 yards in eight plays to pay dirt. The key play in the drive was a 40-yard sprint along the sidelines by Nicky Kutufaris down to the five-yard line. Two plays later he glided four yards off tackle for the touchdown. The extra point attempt failed but SFA had an early 6-0 lead.
SFA then recovered a Cross fumble, and six plays later N. Kutufaris raced back into the end zone from 20 yards out. The extra point attempt again was no good and the first quarter came to a close with SFA on top 12-0.
SFA stopped Holy Cross on downs to start the second quarter, and then tacked on another touchdown when Justin Shields bulled off tackle for a five-yard touchdown to conclude a ten-play, 47-yard drive. Liam McKnight connected with Adam Klein on the “Adam Bomb” for the extra point and a 19-0 half time lead.
Both teams moved the ball in the second half, but were unable to score, and the game ended 19-0.
N. Kutufaris rushed for 102 yards in the first half, and finished the game with 146 yards. Shields added 61 yards to the running attack, as SFA accumulated 227 yards on the ground.
Linemen Patrick Devine, Johnny Powers, Mike Conran, Cole Dumont, Alex Smith, Tommy Kutufaris, Klein and Luke Sprague controlled the line of scrimmage.
SFA’s defense recorded their seventh shutout of the season. Leading tacklers were Klein, Conran, Shields, Devine, N. Kutufaris, Powers, Sprague, Marty O’Connell, Strain, Dumont, T. Kutufaris, Connor Hoffner, Smith, Connor Crawford and Anthony Scarduzio. Shields and Sprague also recovered fumbles.
The Turkey Bowl win capped a splendid season that included two playoff victories and a third place finish in the Parade of Champions tournament.

Springfield U10 Storm are tourney finalists

The Springfield “Storm” boys soccer team were the finalists in the U10 Delco Soccer league after playing, and losing to, Rosetree last weekend. With a week to go in the league, the Storm was in 6th place in their division out of 10 teams. They won their last two games and, with a little help from other teams, came in fourth place in their division and made the playoffs. Only the top four seeds out of the 10 teams make the play-offs. Springfield youth club season ends with a heartbreaker

The Springfield 100 lb. Varsity team lost a heartbreaker Saturday (Nov. 12) to the Darby Township Eagles. The official's calls and the breaks didn't favor the Cougars.
Outstanding defense was evident by holding Darby to 3 first downs all afternoon. Great defensive play by Klaus Gable, Liam DiFonzo, Jeff Biancaniello, Pat Clemens, Patrick Marley Jr., Zach Broomall, Jack Pscenicska, Colin Ellis and Courtland Miller.
A missed out of bounds call by the official allowed Darby to score first. Defense did it's job and shut down the extra point. A great offensive drive by the Cougars: Anthony Rightley accumulated many positive yards.
A 15 yard pass thrown by Quarterback Patrick Toal to Patrick McCann allowed the Cougars great field position. Toal then threw another 15 yard pass completion to Broomall.
To the fans dismay the officials ruled it incomplete, it was clearly caught!
The Cougars never gave up continuing to run the ball down the field. Behind the great blocking of Jimmy Donegan, Toal was able to sneak in for the Cougars first touchdown. Rightley added the extra point, 7-6 Cougars.
Darby answered right back by returning the kickoff. Ethan Crowther busted through the line to stop the extra point. The Cougars answered right back; Rightley's 45 yard touchdown run put the Cougars right back in the game.
Jack Spence's extra point run put the Cougars up 14-12. Once again, the Eagles answered back by returning another kick off. The Cougars stopped the point again.
Springfield put many good offensive drives but just couldn't cross the goal line.
Congrats to all players, coaches and parents on an outstanding season!

Springfield Blue falls to Haverford in ice hockey match

Springfield Blue Elementary ice hockey team played a hard-fought first game of the season against an always powerful Haverford Township.
The first period was an all out defensive battle with Scottie Francis and returning player Conor Rysak holding Haverford to eight shots on goal.
The second period started with Ronan Plummer scoring for the Cougars with an assist from Jason Francis. Both boys had three points in the game. First year player Dara Campo helped out on defense and allowed Mikey Ahern, Eric Agan and Justin Beaky to keep offensive pressure on the Hawks.
Another first year player, Finn Plummer, came to the game proving he is ready to live up to the reputation of his older brothers with a solid skating ability and a hunger to succeed. Devin DeStafano is off to a good start with his first game on ice and will stop at nothing to get the puck.
Goalie Luca DiMarcantonio fought hard all night, keeping the Cougars in the game and facing 25 shots, and Ryan O'Connor put a ton of pressure on Haverford Township all game.

Undefeated OLF defeats St. Francis JV team in semi-final playoff game

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team lost 19-6 to an undefeated Our Lady of Fatima (OLF) team in a semi-final playoff game at Malvern High School. SFA’s record fell to 7-3.
The two teams met earlier in the year, with OLF dominating for an easy victory. This game looked to be going in the same direction as OLF jumped out to a 12-0 lead due to long touchdown runs in both the first and second quarter.
However, SFA continued to battle and cut the lead in half by marching 58 yard in eight plays. Nicky Kutufaris, Derek Strain and Justin Shields alternated carries during the drive, and facing a fourth and one situation, N. Kutufaris busted loose and raced down to the one yard line.
Two plays later, on what turned out to be the final play of the half, Liam McKnight found N. Kutufaris alone in the corner of the end zone for the score. The extra point attempt failed and the half ended with SFA behind only 12-6.
OLF opened the second half with another long touchdown run that increased their lead to 19-6 lead. SFA kept scrapping and proceeded to move the ball down field, but could not sustain the drive as the third quarter came to a close. Neither team would mount any offense in the fourth quarter and the game ended with OLF on top 19-6.
SFA linemen Patrick Devine, Johnny Powers, Cole Dumont, Alex Smith, Tommy Kutufaris, Adam Klein and Luke Sprague fought hard in the trenches against much bigger opponents.
SFA’s defense played hard, and recorded three turnovers. Devine recovered two fumbles and Sprague also pounced on a loose ball.

Former Flyer Keith Primeau honored at Neumann University

Neumann University presented the inaugural Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development Award to Keith Primeau on October 12 in a ceremony on campus.

Primeau, a former captain of the Philadelphia Flyers, skated with the club from 1999 to 2006. He appeared in the National Hockey League All-Star game in 1999 and 2004. A fan favorite, he is best remembered for his goal that ended the longest playoff game in NHL history, a 5-overtime contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins in May of 2000.

The award is presented to individuals who exemplify the development of strong character through athletics and the embodiment of the good that exists in sports. Primeau has become a very public spokesperson about the dangers of concussions in ice hockey. He was diagnosed with the injury four times during his career, the last incident forcing his premature retirement.

He appears on behalf of “Play It Cool,” a concussion prevention program that hosts education days for minor league hockey players across North America. His message is that players can be courageous and competitive without risking brain damage. A Neumann alumnus, Primeau has also agreed to donate his brain to science when he dies.

After receiving the award, Primeau spoke on “The Ethical Value of Sports: Building Character through Competition.” Independence Blue Cross (IBC) was the presenting sponsor of the inaugural award.

The Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development at Neumann University is committed to the concept that sport possesses an inescapable spiritual and ethical dimension that merits academic exploration and practical application. The Institute supervises Neumann’s team chaplains, trains team captains in leadership, and produces practical resources for area coaches.

Springfield Gold Squad opens ice hockey season

The Springfield Cougars Gold squad opened up its play in the Delco Elementary League last Sunday, Nov. 6, at IceWorks in Aston against the Lower Merion Red Bulldogs.
The Cougars came out fighting and jumped out to an early lead, compliments of Ryan Kertis and Adam Baumann and their tough play around the net.
Springfield played a hard-fought game from there out. Lower Merion clawed back time and time again but was never able to figure out newcomer goaltender Brett Barber.
Ryan Kertis (two power-play goals) led the Cougars, along with Aidan Shandley who was in command on both ends of the ice in a 5-3 victory.
The Cougars offensive attack came in barrages from the elusive Austin Bush, Matthew Shandley, Franny Doerr and speedy Riley Garrison.
The story of the game was Barber’s stellar play in net, and he was helped by outstanding defensive efforts by Johnny Carafa, Johnny McCormick and Dylan Bush.

On the opening kick off, Cougar kicker Jake Eden booted an onside kick that was recovered by Nicky Donegan to get the Cougars off to a good start.
Quarterback Nick Donegan tried to get things rolling behind the line of Nick
Cariola, Thomas Dougherty, Mike Leon, Brian Layton, Cole Rhodes, Kieran Morse, and Danny Tommarelli but the drive was thwarted.
The Eagles effectively moved the ball despite the great efforts of the Cougar defensive live of line of Darnell Curtis, Collin Renning, B. King, N. Cariola, Donegan, Morse, and Mike Leon.
The Cougars struggled on offense due to a very aggressive Eagle defense, even the running skills of Dominick Alfonsi, Jake Eden, Alex Sciarrino and Alex Williams was stonewalled.
Unfortunately, Springfield could not solve the problem of the fast Darby running game. The linebacker crew of Rhodes, Sciarrino, Monsi, and Eden couldn’t prevent the second Darby touchdown. The extra point failed and the Cougars found themselves down by 13.
On the ensuing kickoff Alfonsi ran the ball back to the Eagles 15-yard line but a flag nullified the run. The Eagles picked off a pass on the next play that was almost returned for a touchdown; however, a diving Eden made a shoestring tackle.
But the Eagles still found their way back into the end zone. With the PAT, Springfield was down 20-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Cougars moved the ball all the way to the 15-yard line of t the Eagles but couldn’t put it in and that was it for the Cougars’ season.
The Cougars definitely missed teammates Tommy Ward and Logan Chambers who had to sit out due to injury as the Cougars great season came to a close.
100-Pound Varsity Springfield 20 Kennett Union 0
The Cougars continued their winning ways by shutting out Kennett Union in the second round of the playoffs 20-0. Defensive powerhouse Klaus Gable set the tone by busting through the line and causing Kennett to fumble on first down. A defensive stop by Pat Clemens, Jack Spence, Liam DiFonzo, and Jeff Biancaniello put the Cougars offense on the field.
Unable to capitalize, the defense did its job, great tackles made by Ethan Crowther, Collin Ellis, Patrick Marley Jr. and Clemens.
With the ball back, Springfield got great running from Anthony Rightley, Patrick Toal, and Marley. A Marley touchdown put the Cougars up 6-0.
A fumble recovery by Clemens, aided by Jack Psenicska, put the offense back on the field; however, hard runn9ing by Spence, Rightly, and Marley came up short. Once again, Gabel, aided by Dom Addona, took care of the KU offense by sacking the quarterback.
The second half opened with Rightley's huge 50-yard touchdown run, plus scoring the extra point as well to put the Cougars up 13-0.
The defense held KU again, thanks to Pat McCann and Courtland Miller.
Then Marley’s 40-yard run put the Cougars in excellent field position. Rightley scored again, and a fancy fake toss by Quarterback Toal allowed him to bust in for the extra point and a 20-0 lead. There was excellent blocking by center Jimmy Donegan.
Huge defensive plays by Zach Broomall, Crowther, Biancaniello and Gable held KU to two first downs. Lastly, an interception by Rightley put the offense back on the field and victory formation took over.
The Cougars will play in the semi-final game on Saturday against Darby Township.

St. Francis JV defeats St. Max in opening round playoff

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team emerged victorious, 6-0, in a hard fought battle against St. Maximilian Kolbe of West Chester in an opening round playoff game at Episcopal High School. The win improved SFA’s record to 7-2.
The game was a defensive struggle, and yards were hard to come by. Neither team generated any offense in a scoreless first half.
St. Max stopped SFA on downs to start the second half, and proceeded to methodically drive down the field. SFA’s defense finally stiffened and stopped the drive on downs at the 26 yard line as the third quarter came to a close.
SFA then strung together their best drive of the game, as Justin Shields pounded the middle behind the blocking of Luke Sprague, Tommy Kutufaris, Alex Smith and Derek Strain. However, the drive stalled at the St. Max 43 yard line.
But SFA was back in business after forcing St. Max into a punting situation on fourth and sixteen, and pouncing on a bad snap at the St. Max 13 yard line.
Two plays later, Nicky Kutufaris followed the blocks of Adam Klein, Cole Dumont and Johnny Powers and streaked 10 yards into the end zone.
The extra point attempt failed but SFA led 6-0 with less than four minutes to play in the game. After a couple of anxious moments on long pass attempts by St. Max, Shields sealed the victory with an interception.
SFA’s defense played extremely well, limiting St. Max to 61 total yards while recording their sixth shutout of the year. Leading tacklers were Shields, Klein, Strain, Marty O’Connell, Patrick Devine, Mike Conran, Powers, T. Kutufaris, Sprague, N. Kutufaris, Dumont and Connor Crawford.
SFA will face an undefeated Our Lady of Fatima team in the next round of the playoffs 3 p.m. Sunday at Malvern High School.

80-Pound JV Gold Springfield 25 Haverford 12
The JV Gold team played its final game of the season and defeated Haverford on Oct. 22.
The powerhouse offensive line of Ethan Johnson, Connor Roche, Ben Kaminski, Nathan Fox, Daniel Ryan, and Victor Stafford created holes and held Haverford’s defense. Center Anthony McBride adeptly snapped the ball to quarterback Matthew Ellison.
Running backs Art Minchin and Brett Gougler gained notable and consistent yardage. Matt Gagliardi demonstrated explosive running and scored two TDs. Matthew Ellison had impressive drives, also scoring two TDs.
Gougler dodged Haverford and scored an extra point. Nicolas Impriano also snapped the ball and Nick Staud played quarterback; both did a remarkable job. Nolan Huntley, Xavier Wendel, and Brandon Peters led the defense with hard hitting. Todd Garret, John Hennessy, and Nico Santini had forceful game saving tackles. Garret and Santini also recovered fumbles.
Alex Klein, Tymier Dark-Barnes, Gavin Von Berg and Luca Forgione also had powerful hits knocking down Haverford’s offense. Stephen Graney demonstrated his speed by recovering a fumble. The MVP’s this week were Brandon Peters and Ben Kaminski.
Ryan Convery was unable to play due to an injury but showed his team support on sidelines.
The Cougar team had an impressive record of 7-2 (including pre-season games). The parents and players would like to thank the coaches for their dedication and for this awesome football season.
80-Pound Varsity Springfield 7 Haverford 6
The Cougars traveled to Haverford on Oct. 22 for the final regular season game.
The Cougar defensive line, lead by
Michael Leon, Colin Renning, Nick Canola, Kieran Morse, Brian King, and Kick Donegan, held Haverford to short gains in the opening quarter of play.
This game quickly turned into a defensive battle between the two teams with neither able to do much.
Right before the half is when things went
haywire for the Cougars; QB Nick Donegan dropped back for a pass intended for Dominick Alfonsi but the Fords defense sniffed it out and picked off the pass, advancing the ball to the Springfield
10-yard line. Alex Williams’ excellent play prevented a Fords TD. Two plays later the Fords did cross the end zone to take the lead. The extra point, however, was stopped due to an great play by Michael Leon and Jake Eden. Leon had the runner around the legs and, as he was lunging forward to cross the goal line, Eden came in to give the final blow and that was it for the half.
The second half started out with the Fords on offense but the defense stepped it up another notch thanks to the awesome play of the line and line backers Alfonsi, Eden, Cole Rhodes, and
Alex Sciarrino.
As the fourth quarter wound down the Cougars were firing on all cylinders behind the O line of Danny Tommarelli, Brian Layton, Darnell Curtis, Cole Rhodes, Nick Cariola and Mike Leon who opened up running lanes for Alex Williams, Sciarrino, Eden and Rhodes but it was Alfonsi who had a jail break run for 50 yard that tied the game for the Cougars. With only two minutes left the cougars needed the PAT to win the game. Donegan took the snap and handed off to Eden who bounced the run to the outside to give the Cougars the lead.
The Fords were not done yet. They were moving the ball when on fourth and five the Cougars defense rose to stop the Fords and end the game with a final score of 7-6.
The Cougars surely missed three of their teammates for this game: Tommy Ward and Logan Chambers were out with injuries, and Thomas Dougherty with illness. Hopefully, they will be back for the playoffs.
100-Pound JV Springfield 35 Havertown 13
Springfield 100-pound JV ended a fantastic season with a big win over Havertown on Friday night.
The Cougars’ offense, set the tone of the game early on with a 60-yard return by Kahlid Holman-Dark. Soon after, Aidan Shandley had an outstanding catch to get the Cougars to within two yards to pay dirt. A powerful run and TD by Jimmy O’Neill gave the Cougars their first lead of the game.
Tanner Robinson had two touchdowns and a huge running game. Kevin Rechner had two extra points and a great 50-yard run. QB Terrence Kelly added the necessary extra points when it counted.
Joe Pontano recovered an on-sides kick and set up the team for another score. Paul Conlan led a powerful rush downfield and added the touchdown that gave the Cougars a very comfortable lead at the half.
The offense rallied behind the excellent blocking of Chris Brolley, and Aidan Hoopes. Chris Rich and Franco Tommarelli created the necessary holes to allow huge running gains by both Garrett Cooley and Kyle Holstein.
The second half saw a great fumble recovery by Pat Dougherty and an interception by Carson Shaner. Jake Vaughan and Nick Finizio came up with huge stops in the backfield.
The unstoppable defensive line of Jake Bush, Danny Albany, and Jake Quatrani kept Havertown out of the red zone. Michael Eberhardt, John Godsey and Vince DiVario came up with huge defensive stops when it was necessary. Matt Santarelli, Ethan Scott, and Dylan Laffey proved that the Cougars were not backing down by rounding out the powerhouse defense.
100-Pound Varsity Springfield 26 Haverford 0
The 100-pound varsity ended its regular season play with another shut out victory, beating Haverford 26-0. The Cougars won the Central Division and will start playoffs next week. The team played like a well-oiled machine, and the victory was a total team effort.
The Cougars put six on the board with quarterback Patrick Toal throwing 25-yard touchdown pass to Zach Broomall. Ethan Crowther, Jimmy Donnegan, Pat Clemens, and Colin Ellis provided great pass blocking. Jack Spence busting through for the extra point put the Cougars up 7-0.
Anthony Rightley scored the second touchdown by walking in the end zone to make it 13-0.
A 45-yard touch down run by Rightley put the Cougars up 19-0. Jack Pscenicska added the extra point.
Rightley's 20-yard run for the fourth touchdown put the Cougars in control. Spence added the extra point.
Patrick Marley Jr., Courtland Miller, Spence and Pscenicska's hard running help the Cougars stay in control offensively. Defensively Klaus Gable, Pat McCann, Jeff Biancanella, Clemens, Crowther, Ellis, and Broomall shut down the Fords. Touchdown saving tackles by Liam D'Fonzo and Rightley were key for the shut out. Fumble recoveries by Clemens, Ellis, Broomall, Gable and Rightley kept the offense on the field. Dom Addona's quarterback sack was the defensive play of the game.
The Cougars will open the first round of the playoffs at home this Saturday against Prospect Park.

Gianna Mirigliano out ran two Ukranian defenders, and her shot was deflected by the Slava keeper but Kristen Kutufaris was there to slam it into the back of the net to notch the Sparks first win of the season.
Kutufaris started as the Sparks goal keeper and was inserted as an offensive replacement in the second half. Her replacement, Aislinn McAnulla, stopped three Slava shots to keep them off the board. With time running down in the second half, Kutufaris went back in goal and was aided by the strong defensive duo of Lanie Morris and Lauren Johnston.
Megan Vince, Kacie Kinney, Kira Criscuolo, Olivia Fabian, Ruth Dougherty and the three Walters sisters, Cathleen, Carly and Caroline, kept applying offense pressure in the second half to keep the ball on the Ukranian side of the field.
The Sparks travel to Dover, Dela. next week to take on CDSA Independence.

SFA junior varsity footballers raise record to 5-2

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth and sixth grade football team raised their record to 5-2 by subduing St. Dorothy’s at Steel Field in Havertown.
It was a tale of two halves: SFA dominated the first half; and St. Dot’s battled back to tie the score in the second half before succumbing at the end.
Liam McKnight hooked up with Nicky Kutufaris for a 58-yard scoring strike on the third play from scrimmage. In the second quarter, McKnight completed a ten- play, 54-yard drive with a four-yard keeper. SFA failed on both PATs, and the half ended 12-0.
Defensively, SFA allowed only one first down and 17 total yards.
St. Dot’s came alive in the second half and tied the score midway through the fourth quarter on a long touchdown run. SFA stopped both extra point attempts to preserve a 12-12 tie.
St. Dot’s then had a chance to take the lead after recovering an onside kick, but Derek Strain recovered a fumble for SFA to thwart the threat.
The offense took advantage of the turnover, and proceeded to drive 72 yards in four plays for the winning score. N. Kutufaris accounted for 71 of the yards, including a 30-yard dash off tackle for the final touchdown. McKnight connected with N. Kutufaris for the extra point and a 19-12 lead.
SFA then withstood a final St. Dot’s effort, with Connor Crawford helping to secure the victory with an interception.
SFA accumulated 220 total yards, as linemen Patrick Devine, Cole Dumont, Derek Strain, Alex Smith, Connor Hoffner, Tommy Kutufaris, Adam Klein and Luke Sprague did a good job battling in the trenches.
N. Kutufaris tallied 108 rushing yards, and Justin Shields chipped in with 40 rushing yards.
SFA will clash with St. Anastasia this Saturday at noon at Church Road Field.

Penncrest High School hosting Mat Mayhem wrestling clinic

Penncrest High School will host the second annual Mat Mayhem wrestling clinic on Sat. November 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the PHS Auxiliary Gym. Kids from grades 4th through 9th are invited to this clinic dedicated to developing skills and techniques to become a champion wrestler. No wrestling experience is necessary to sign up. Springfield U-9 Renegades strike again

Springfield’s U-9 Renegades soccer team continued their winning streak in a 2-1 win against Lower Merion Oct. 15.
Jake Kuzmick and Matthew Ellison both had strong kicks scoring goals for the Renegades. Momsif Atify, Rory Travers, Ben Storz, Evan Gallagher and Ryan Peterson showed speed and skillful passing on the offense.
Andrew Fox, Jacob McCarthy and Nicholas Dezzi dribbled and passed with precision. Jake Peichel was a defensive powerhouse, continually turning Lower Merion away.
Brandon McKnight did a strong job at goalie the first half. Kevin McCann did a superb job at goalie the second half.
Lower Merion intensified the heat in the last few minutes of the game by putting their entire team on offense. McCann had many game saving stops. Lower Merion only managed to put one goal in the net with many last minute attempts.

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team lost to an undefeated Our Lady of Fatima (OLF) team to dampen an otherwise beautiful homecoming day celebration at Church Road Field. SFA’s record fell to 4-2.
SFA could not generate any momentum in the first half as OLF cruised to 25-0 lead at intermission.
SFA overcame their opening half jitters and both the offense and defense came to life in the second half. SFA posted scores in the third and fourth quarters, and the defense allowed only one first down.
Nicky Kutufaris broke loose on a sweep and tight roped down the sideline for a 47-yard touchdown. Liam McKnight then connected with Kutufaris for the extra point and SFA was on the scoreboard 25-7.
On defense Marty O’Connell recovered a fumble, but SFA could not capitalize on the turnover and the third quarter came to a close.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, SFA’s defense sniffed out a fake punt and pinned OLF down at the 7 yard line. Three plays later Kutufaris raced around end for a five-yard touchdown.
The extra point attempt failed, but SFA had trimmed the lead to 25-13. Justin Shields then recovered an onside kick for SFA, but there would be no further scoring in the game.
SFA will try to get back on track this Saturday versus St. Dorothy at noon at Steel Road Field.

The Gold team continued its winning streak on Oct. 16 with an impressive victory of 33-6.
Center Anthony McBride and quarterback Matthew Ellison led the Cougars’ offense. Brett Gougler was the high scorer for the Cougars with two touchdowns. Linebacker Stephen Graney recovered a fumble and had the longest run of the day for an 85-yard TD. Ellison threw a strong reception to Minchin who dodged the Coatesville’s defense for a TD.
The Cougars mixed things up and gave linebacker Todd Garret an opportunity at running back. Garret took full advantage and put six more points on the board. Daniel Ryan scored an extra point, and Matt Gagliardi scored two extra points.
Ethan Johnson led the fierce offensive line with his powerful blocking. Connor Roche, Nathan Fox, Nicholas Impriano, Ben Kaminski, Ryan Convery and Victor Stafford also hit hard on offense.
Todd Garrett led The Cougar’s defense by pounding Coatesville with forceful tackles. Other defensive highlights included Alex Klein who recovered a fumble and had tackles in the backfield. Nolan Huntley, John Hennessy, Nico Santini, Gavin Von Berg, Nick Staud, Brandon Peters, Xavier Wendel, and Tymier Dark-Barnes also showed muscle and strong tackling.
Stephan Graney was the defensive MVP, and Ethan Johnson was the offensive MVP. The Cougars continue to improve each week as evidenced by this win.
100-pound JV Brandywine Delaware 20 Springfield 12
Springfield fell to the Brandywine Warriors on last Sunday despite a hard-fought battle.
The Cougar Offense, led by QB Terrence Kelly, tried to take control early, rallying behind the excellent blocking of Chris Brolley, Kevin Rechner, Aidan Hoopes, Chris Rich and Carsen Shaner. Running back Tanner Robinson racked up a huge running game and scoring two touchdowns. Aidan Shandley had a career-high four receptions, surprising everyone with a one-handed grab to gain a much-needed first down late in the game. Franco Tommarelli and Pat Dougherty created the necessary holes for Jimmy O’Neill and Khalid Holman-Dark to come up with big gains when it counted.
Unfortunately, the Cougars had a tough time completing the extra points allowing the Warriors to keep the lead.
Defensively, the Cougars never gave up. The powerhouse defensive line of Jake Bush, Kyle Holstein, Jake Quatrani, John Godsey, Vince DiVario, Matt Santarelli, and Ethan Scott proved to be a formidable. Dylan Laffey, Garrett Cooley, and Joe Pontano had several saves in the backfield that kept the Warriors within reach. Jake Vaughan had a fantastic near-interception that created the turnover on downs late in the game.
Despite exhaustive efforts by Paul Conlan, Danny Albany and Nick Finizio, the Warriors got to the outside at times and racked up 20 points against.
SYC will take on Haverford next Friday at the Fords home field.
100-pound Varsity Springfield 26 Brandywine 0
The Cougars got back to their winning ways by defeating the Brandywine Warriors 26-0. Springfield leads the Bert Bell Central Division. The victory was a total team effort.
Once again the defense dominated, allowing the offense to take over with explosive Jack Psenicska, Patrick Marley Jr., Jack Spence and Courtland Miller. These boys hit the holes hard for many positive yards. Psenicska put the first six up by slamming through at the goal line. A 35- yard touchdown run by Anthony Rightley put the Cougars up 12-0. Two 25-yard pass completions by quarterback Patrick Toal, one to Zach Broomall and the other to Psenicska was good enough for first downs and put the Cougars in scoring position. Toal took advantage of the field position and put six more on the board by sneaking into the end zone. Once again, outstanding center Jimmy Donegan led the way. Rightley added the extra point by juking an opponent and cruising into the end zone. The Cougars led 19-0.
A beautiful 60-yard run by Rightley, and a diving extra point by Psenicska put 26 on the board for Springfield.
Defensive powerhouse play by Pat McCann, Pat Clemens, Jeff Biancaniello, Liam DiFonzo, Collin Ellis and Ethan Crowther held the Warriors to one first down. Klaus Gable and Dom Adonna's unstoppable penetration on the defensive line was key to shutting down the Warriors.
The Cougars travel to Haverford on Saturday. A win will give the Cougars a Central Division championship.

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team suffered their first defeat of the year to St. Denis in a hard fought battle at Paddock Park in Havertown. The 16-12 loss dropped SFA’s record to 4-1.
SFA jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter on a Nicky Kutufaris one-yard plunge into the end zone. A Liam McKnight-to-Mike Conran 34-yard hook up down to the five yard line set up the touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked.
Midway through the second quarter, St. Denis took the lead by connecting on a couple of long pass plays, including one for the tying score. St. Denis then converted the crucial extra point for an 8-6 lead. St. Denis then capitalized on a SFA turnover, scoring a touchdown on the last play of the half. The extra point kick was good once again and St. Denis took a 16-6 lead into halftime.
SFA clawed their way back into the game when McKnight executed a picture perfect 22-yard scoring strike to N. Kutufaris late in the third quarter. The extra point attempt failed but SFA closed the gap to 16-12. However, despite a couple more opportunities on offense, SFA could not generate the go ahead touchdown.
SFA’s defense allowed their first points of the season in the second quarter, but then stiffened in the second half and allowed only one first down.
Leading tacklers were Justin Shields, Johnny Powers, Marty O’Connell, Tommy Kutufaris, Derek Strain, Adam Klein, Patrick Divine, Mike Conran, Connor Crawford, Cole Dumont and N. Kutufaris. Dumont also recovered a fumble.
SFA will celebrate homecoming on Saturday at Church Road Field versus Our Lady of Fatima. Varsity will play at 10 a.m. with the JV to follow around noon. All are welcome, especially alumni of the SFA football/cheerleading programs.

Gold had a heart pounding game at Haverford’s homecoming on Oct. 8. The Cougars got off to a slow start and gave up two TDs in the first minutes.
The hard hitting offensive line of Daniel Ryan, Connor Roche, Ethan Johnson, Nathan Fox, Nicholas Impriano, Ben Kaminski, Victor Stafford, and Ryan Convery fought back with Anthony McBride at center and Matthew Ellison at QB. Brett Gougler consistently gained good yardage for the Cougars. Matt Gagliardi continued to demonstrate his offensive speed and scored two touchdowns. Art Minchin scored an extra point. The Cougars led 13 to 12 at half time. The offensive continued to dominate with Minchin dodging through Haverford for another TD. Ellison had the longest run of the day for an 85-yard TD that, unfortunately, was called back due to a penalty.
The Cougar’s defensive line of Nico Santini, Gavin Von Berg, Nick Staud, Brandon Peters, Jerry Coia, Xavier Wendel, and Nolan Huntley hit strong and hard to hold the Cougars’ lead. Tymier Dark-Barnes and Luca Forgione both had tackles in the backfield resulting in yardage loss for Haverford. Todd Garret, Alex Klein, Stephen Graney, and John Hennessy had game saving tackles as Haverford pushed forcefully. Klein stopped Haverford in their tracks by recovering a fumble.
Haverford had one more TD, but were unable to get past the Cougars defense for the extra point. The Cougar’s victory was hard fought and well deserved!

On Oct. 8, the Cougars went on the road to face the Downingtown Young Whippets.
The first half opened with DYW unable to make any gains due to intense tackling by John McCormick, Vince DiVario, Kyle Holstein and Jake Quatrani.
The Cougars’ Jimmy O’Neill and Tanner Robinson carried up field for first downs, but Springfield was unable to score.
DYW drove, but Carson Shaner stopped them on the 15, and Khalid Holman-Dark on a fourth and goal.
A Cougars’ pass was intercepted, but thanks to a TD-saving tackle by Chris Rich, DYW did not score.
The Cougars had fierce tackling by Patrick Dougherty, Joe Pontano, Ethan Scott and Matt Santarelli. Kevin Rechner quarterback sack pushed Downingtown back to the 25. Then Jake Vaughan’s interception gave the Cougars the ball ending the half at 0-0.
Robinson ran for 40-yards thanks to stiff blocking by Michael Eberhardt and Chris Brolley in the second half.
Nick Finizio, Garret Cooley and Jake Bush hard punishing tackles, but DYW scored making it 7-0.
Terrence Kelly passed to Franco Tommarelli for a first down. Robinson kept pushing up field, but was unable to score.
Paul Conlin made a game-saving tackle, and Finizio caught DYW’s punt. With 27 seconds left in the game, a crisp snap by Aiden Hoopes to Robinson allowed for a completed pass to Aidan Shandley for a touchdown. The Cougars tried for two points, but were denied. The hard-fought game ended 7-6.

The Springfield U-9 Renegades team hosted Coventry on Oct. 1 at Netherwood Field. Andrew Fox scored one goal assisted by Matthew Ellison, and Jake Kuzmick scored two goals for the Renegades.
Brendan McKnight goal tended the first half and Kevin McCann the second, both did a great job in goal. Ben Storz, Momsif Atify and Rory Travers dribbled and passed the ball skillfully through the Red Devils.
Nicholas Dezzi, Ryan Peterson, Evan Gallagher, Jacob McCarthy and Jake Peichel helped defend the Renegades goal and rotated to offense, maneuvering right passed the Red Devils.
The Renegades dominated the field and ended with a well-deserved 3 to 1 victory.
K-1 Soccer
The UCLA team won its second game of the season Oct. 1 improving its record to 2 - 0. Bryan Minott and Bridget Robinson each scored two goals in the team's 4 - 1 victory.

The Cougars hosted 69th street on homecoming weekend on Sept. 30 and left North Avenue field with a 12-6 victory.
QB Matthew Ellison had a 35-yard run, landing just one yard short of a TD. Running back Matt Gagliardi finished the job and scored the first six points of the game.
The 69th street team answered back with a touchdown. However, defensive line backer John Hennessy and Nico Santini pounded the 69th street offense to impede any further gains. Alex Kline, Andrew Ensley, and Todd Garrett also came up with strong hitting key tackles. Gavin Von Berg, Nick Staud, Brandon Peters, Jerry Coia, Tymier Dark-Barnes, and Nolan Huntley showed their muscle on the defense line by holding the 69th offense back. Stephen Graney had a key interception when the 69th offense attempted a pass play.
The Cougars offensive line returned to field with center Ben Kaminski leading the drive. RB Brett Gougler and Arthur Minchin gained yardage for the Cougars.
The offensive line of Connor Roche, Ethan Johnson, Nathan Fox, Daniel Ryan, Nicholas Impriano, Victor Stafford, and Ryan Convery trampled over the 69th defense. Graney’s interception and the muscle of the offensive line set up Gagliardi in position to maneuver into the end zone once again, cementing a 12-6 victory.

The Cougars lost another hard fought game against the Marple Tigers on Homecoming on Oct. 1.
The Cougars struck first thanks to the blocking of Nick Cariola, Colin Renning, Thomas Dougherty, Brian King, Logan Chambers and Danny Tommarelli. The hard work of this line gave Dominick Alfonsi the hole he needed to ramble off a 45-yard touchdown. The PAT was good due to a great second effort with Jake Eden shedding two would be tacklers to cross the goal line.
The Tigers drive was moving well when Alex Williams intercepted a pass and ran it back for the Cougars second TD. The PAT was good due to a great fake by QB Nicky Donegan that allowed Alfonsi to score. The Tigers scored at the end of the half to cut the lead to 14-8.
The second half was not as good for the cougars, Despite the hard work of Tommy Ward, Alex Sciarrino, Kieran Morse, Brian Layton, Darnell Curtis, Collin Renning, and Tommarelli, the
Cougars defense could not stop the tigers from scoring and taking the lead.
The Cougars couldn’t move the ball effectively despite the hard running of Cole Rhodes, Williams, Sciarrino, Eden and Alfonsi.
Although, the Cougar defense never gave up, line backers Alfonsi. Eden, Ward, Sciarrino and safety Williams just could not corral the Tigers runners. Marple scored for the final time to end the scoring and the game with the Tigers on top 22-14.

The Cougars hosted the Marple Newtown Tigers on Homecoming on Oct. 1.
The game opened up with a tremendous run by Tanner Robinson to the two. Chris Brolley made a strong block allowing Jimmy O’Neill to score a quick TD. Terence Kelly then passed to Franco Tommarelli for the extra point.
Marple’s fumbled kick-off was recovered by Joe Pontano.
Michael Eberhardt and Chris Rich made excellent blocks while Paul Conlin had a sprinting carry up field.
Marple gained possession before the end of the half. Jake Vaughan and Nick Finizio made several fierce tackles, assisted by Garrett Cooley, Vince DiVario, and Jake Bush, stopping Marple’s attempt at gaining yards. A solo tackle by Khalid Holman-Dark gave the Cougars possession.
A pick-off by Marple gave them possession, ending the half at 7-0.
The second half showcased the Cougars D-line. Jarring tackles made by Patrick Dougherty, Matt Santarelli, Carson Shaner and Dylan Laffey stopped Marple for most of their possession until a “Quarterback sneak” gave them a TD, but Jake Vaughan’s solo tackle denied them the extra point. The fourth quarter started with a well-executed snap by Aiden Hoopes, allowing a completed pass by Kelly to Aidan Shandley for a first down.
The Cougars’ D-liners Kevin Rechner, Danny Albany, Ethan Scott and Jake Quatrani held Marple still. Tackling by John McCormick and Kyle Holstein stopped Marple on their final drive, giving the Cougars a Homecoming 7-6 win.

The Cougars celebrated Homecoming with their third shutout victory this season, defeating Marple 14-0 and leading the Bert Bell Central Division.
The defense continued to dominate with the hard hitting by Klaus Gable, Ethan Crowther and Pat Clemens.
The offense picked up many yards. Good, hard, solid running by Patrick Marley Jr., Jack Spence and Jack Psenicska. Anthony Rightley racked up over 100 yards in rushing, an all time high for the team. Cougar's Quarterback Patrick Toal put up the first six points with a quarterback sneak, behind the blocking of center, Jimmy Donegan. Rightley added the extra point by busting through to the end zone. The Cougars led at halftime 7-0.
Rightley added to the lead by scoring the second touchdown of the morning. Quarterback Toal's throw to Zack Broomall for the extra point put the Cougars up 14-0.
A touchdown saving tackle by Jeff Biancaniello kept the Tigers off the board. An interception by Rightley put the Cougars offense in control once again. Scrambling to avoid a tackle quarterback Toal threw down field to Broomall for a 35-yard pass completion for a first down. Clemens quieted the Tigers with a huge sack to seal the victory.
Cougar stand outs: Colin Ellis, Dom Addona, Liam DiFonzo, Pat Curran, Pat McCann and Courtland Miller contributed to the shutdown of the Tigers.
The Cougars travel to Downingtown to take on the Young Whippets this weekend.

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth and sixth grade football team thumped St. Bernadette 29-0 under the lights at Dermond Field in Drexel Hill on a misty Friday night, and improved its record to 4-0.
SFA immediately lit up the scoreboard when Nicky Kutufaris returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. Mike Conran booted the extra point, and in a blink of an eye SFA was leading 8-0. There was no further scoring in the first quarter.
SFA struck pay dirt twice in the second quarter when Liam McKnight tossed scoring passes of 29 yards to Conran and 35 yards to Tommy Kutufaris. Conran then converted both extra points, one by foot and the other through the air to N. Kutufaris. The half came to a close with SFA on top 23-0.
SFA completed the scoring in the fourth quarter when Anthony Scarduzio skated 32 yards around end for a touchdown.
Despite the sloppy field conditions, neither team committed a turnover.
SFA’s defense allowed only 44 yards and two first downs, and remains unscored upon for the year.
Leading tacklers were Patrick Divine, Tommy Kutufaris, Justin Shields, Marty O’Connell, Adam Klein, Connor Crawford, Johnny Powers, Derek Strain, Cole Dumont, Mike Conran, N. Kutufaris and Scarduzio.
SFA will travel to Paddock Park in Havertown to battle St. Denis this Saturday at noon.

The Gold team defeated Clifton on Sept. 19 at Clifton’s home field. The ferocious offensive line of Connor Roche, Brandon Peters, Ethan Johnson, Daniel Ryan, Victor Swafford, Xavier Wendel, and Ryan Convery enabled the cougars to put points on the board early in the game.
RB Matt Gagliardi and QB Matt Ellison had impressive 60-yard runs, both scoring TDs for the Cougars. Gagliardi struck again to score a second touchdown and Ellison scored the extra point.
Other offensive highlights: Arthur Minchin’s successfully receiving a 25-yard pass from Ellison; Brett Gougler also gained notable yardage for the Cougars; and center Anthony McBride snapped the ball impeccably.
The defense line of Nick Staud, Andrew Ensley, Luca Forgione, Nolan Huntley, Gavin Von Berg, John Hennessy, Tymier Dark-Barnes, Todd Garret, Jerry Coia, Ethan Johnson, Nick Impriano and Nico Santini pushed Clifton backwards on the field. Alex Kline put two more points on the board for the Cougars with a powerful defensive safety. The Cougars took the lead at half time 22-0.
In the second half the Cougars mixed things up, and Nick Staud did a strong job at quarterback, and Nick Impriano played center skillfully. Stephan Graney ran the ball for tough yardage. Connor Roche and Ethan Johnson were often in the Clifton backfield on defense.
Clifton did manage to score one TD in the second half. The Gold team had a well-deserved 22-6 victory of 22 to 6.

On Sept. 24, the Cougars hosted another undefeated team in their division, the Darby Township Eagles.
The Eagles ran off tackle for a touchdown of the first plat of the game. The PAT was good and the Cougars were down early again.
On the Eagles next possession, the awesome defensive play of Brian Layton, Kieran Morse, Cole Rhodes, Nick Cariola, Colin Renning and Brian King stopped the Eagles in their tracks.
In the second quarter, the Cougars’ QB Nicky Donegan got the ball rolling using a hard count to pull the Eagles offside.
The hard hitting of offensive linemen Thomas Dougherty, DJ Curtis, Michael Leon, Renning, Cariola, King Logan Chambers and Danny Tommarelli gave the Cougars some nice holes to run threw.
The Running back corps of Dominick Alfonsi, Alex Sciarrino, Hake Eden and Alex Williams had their work cut out for them against a very fast Eagles’ secondary. The Cougars managed to get to the Eagles’ five-yard line as the first half ended.
The second half began with a controversial holding call that negated a 65-yard touchdown run by Williams, causing the Cougars lost momentum.
The line backing crew of Tommy Ward, Eden, Alfonsi and Sciarrino swarmed the running backs to keep the Eagles out of the end zone.
With time winding down, the Cougars still had one last chance to tie this game but came up short when a pass to Eden was intercepted with not time left.

Springfield hosted Downingtown on Sept 25. The game opened with Cougar D-liners Paul Conlan, Dylan Archer, Vince DiVario, and Kyle Holstein stopping Downingtown, quickly giving the ball to the Cougars. Tanner Robinson completed a 25-yard pass to Aidan Shandley to the 10-yard line. Terence Kelly handed the ball to Jimmy O’Neill for a touchdown putting the Cougars up 6-0.
Franco Tommarelli’s kick-off was fumbled, and recovered by the Cougars.
Michael Eberhardt, Chris Rich, Chris Brolley and Aiden Hoopes blocked hard, but the Cougars opportunity to score was lost. Kevin Rechner and Jake Bush made well executed solo tackles while Jake Quatrani, Matt Santarelli and Ethan Scott’s defense held Downingtown for most of their possession until an outside run earned Downingtown a TD and extra point – ending the half at 7-6.
In the second half, Joe Pontano recovered the second fumbled kick-off by Downingtown.
The Cougars’ O-line fought hard up field, but was unable to score. Nick Finizio, Jake Vaughan, Carson Shaner and Dylan Laffey jarred Downingtown with strong solo tackles. John McCormick, Garrett Cooley, Pat Dougherty and Danny Albany fought hard with aggressive tackles. However, another outside run by Downingtown proved successful, giving them a TD, but were denied the extra-point. The hard-fought game ended with Downingtown leading 13-6.

The Cougars suffered their first loss of the season against a tough Darby Township on Sept. 23. The team's record is now 3-1; they still hold a lead in the 100-pound Bert Bell Central Division.

They held BYC to one first down. Offensively, Jack Spence set the tone by running the opening kick off back to give the Cougars the lead. Zach Broomall had two receptions thrown by Quarterback Patrick Toal. Patrick Marley Jr. had a TD run. Anthony Rightley, Marley Jr. and Biancaniello continued to pound the holes for first downs.

SYC traveled to Clifton for the "Prime Time" night game, and handled the Ram's with ease, winning 14-0. The Cougars offensive line dominated the Ram's defense with help from Jimmy Donegan, and Jack Psenicska. Rightley's touchdown gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead. Toal's completion to Broomall put the Cougars over the top 14-0.
Week 3

Rose Tree 6
Springfield hosted the Rose Tree Colts. The defense continued to play tough, Toal's touchdown pass to Broomall, a quarterback keeper by Toal, and a quick sweep by Rightley sealed the deal for a victory.
The Cougars homecoming is this Saturday; they will host the Marple Tiger at 11 a.m.

SFA jumped out of the starting blocks quickly by scoring on two of their first three offensive plays.Johnny Powers set up the first score by returning the opening kickoff 25 yards. Nicky Kutufaris then bolted for touchdown runs of 28 and 14 yards, with key blocks provided by Cole Dumont, Tommy Kutufaris, Mike Conran and Powers.Both extra point attempts failed and the first quarter came to a close with SFA on top 12-0.
That would be the extent of the scoring in the first half, although SFA had a long touchdown run nullified late in the second quarter.
SFA tacked on their final touchdown in the fourth quarter by driving 50 yards in eight plays.Quarterback Liam McKnight snuck into the end zone from a yard out to complete the drive and the scoring at 18-0.

Daniel Hoban stunned fans with the phenomenal improvement he showed in a week’s time and players Ryan Holmes, Reagan Megow and Liam Megow were contributors to the team’s overall success as well this week. Injured players Jacob Leinhauser and Anthony DeLuca cheered the team on along the sidelines while the rest of the team (Brendan Dougherty, Patrick Lawson, Ethan Mahan and William Ruggiero) were there in heart. The team has their competitive juices flowing and is looking forward to facing another opponent next week and having a season full of learning and fun! The U11 Striker team continued their season this weekend with games on both Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18. Gary Smolen and Bill Gardner coached the team to victories on both days with a 10-0 win against the Interboro soccer club on Saturday and a 3-2 win over King of Prussia. The defense made a strong showing on both days with John Higson (shown above) and Will Gardner as goal keepers. The offense was calm under pressure putting together well-developed runs resulting in goals from Will Gardner, John Higson, Timothy Cincotta, Owen Deluca, Gavin Flanagan, Michael Koenig, and Thomas Royds-Helverson. The defense was solid through numerous attacks contributing to the back to back wins.

Haverford Soccer Club is proud to bring soccer to the youth in our community. The organization is made up of volunteer coaches, managers, board members and others who have a true love of the sport. In fact, many of the club’s coaches and adult volunteers still play the game. U14 Heat Coach Dave Richards plays for the Oakmont Celtics, an over-35 team sponsored by the Oakmont Pub in Havertown. The Team will play this Fall at YSC in Wayne in the Open Men’s League and during the Spring and Summer they play in an O35 League at the Phelps School in Malvern.

Additionally, nearly 25 men aged 19 to 65 play every Sunday in a friendly game called "World Cup Sunday" and have been doing so for over 10 years. The pickup game is made up of HSC coaches and includes former HSC players who played in the HSC as far back as when the club was first founded. It is a great way to keep playing opportunities available in a fun, open playing format long after high school. Several of the Oakmont Celtics started at the "World Cup Sunday" Pickup Game.

SFA junior varsity teams shuts out St. Katherine's

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team raised their record to 2-0 by shutting out St. Katherine 22-0 at Church Road Field on another gorgeous Saturday afternoon.
Nicky Kutufaris returned the opening kickoff 30 yards, and then accounted for all 40 yards of the four play scoring drive, culminating in a 25-yard dash around end. Mike Conran booted the extra point and SFA was quickly on top 8-0.
Conran then returned a punt 35 yards to give SFA good field position at the fifteen yard line. Three plays later Kutufaris darted four yards around end for the score. The extra point attempt failed and SFA led at the end of the half 14-0.
SFA tacked on their final touchdown in the third quarter by driving 52 yards in eight plays. Cole Dumont gained thirty yards during the drive, and bulled in from a yard out for the touchdown. Conran once again kicked the extra point and the scoring was completed at 22-0.
Linemen Patrick Devine, Justin Shields, Derek Strain, Alex Smith, Tommy Kutufaris, Adam Klein and Luke Sprague controlled the line of scrimmage the entire game.
SFA’s defense throttled St. Katherine’s, allowing only two first downs and 22 total yards enroute to recording their second shutout of the year. Leading tacklers were Shields, Strain, Klein, T. Kutufaris, Dumont, N. Kutufaris, Sprague, Conran and Liam McKnight.
SFA will host St. Joseph’s of Aston on Saturday at noon at Church Road Field.

The Gold JV team played Great Valley on Sept. 17. Although the Cougars did not walk away with a win, they put up a good fight.
The offensive highlights include a 60-yard run by QB Matt Ellison, a touch down by Brett Gougler, and a reception by Arthur Minchin for the extra point. Ethan Johnson and Connor Roche held their opponents back consistently on the offensive line. Also performing well on the offense was Daniel Ryan, Xavier Wendel, Victor Swafford, and Brandon Peters. Anthony McBride did a strong job at center and Matt Gagliardi gained tough yardage for the Cougars.
The Cougar’s defensive highlights included a recovered fumble by linebacker John Hennessy. Todd Garrett was a defensive machine with numerous tackles. Alex Kline and Nico Santini had outstanding tackles. Nick Staud, Andrew Ensley, Luca Forgione, Nolan Huntley, Gavin Von Berg, Stephen Graney, Nick Impriano, and Tymier Barnes showed other impressive defensive skills.
The gold team fought until the clock ran out with Great Valley up 13-7.
The offensive MVP was QB Matthew Ellison and the defensive MVP was Todd Garret.

In this battle with the undefeated Rose Tree Colts on Sept. 18, the Colts scored on their first two possessions and took a 14-0 lead.
On Springfield’s third possession, quarterback Nicky Donegan led the team behind the blocking of Cole Rhodes, Logan Chambers, Collin Renning, Brian King, Michael Leon, Danny Tommarelli, Thomas Dougherty and Nicholas Cariola. Alex Sciarrino, Jake Eden and Alex Williams supplied hard running, along with Dominick Alfonsi’s determination lead to a Cougar TD and PAT.
The defense line of Kieran Morse, Brian King, DJ Curtis, Colin Renning, Mike Leon and Danny Tommarelli then stepped up, shutting down the Colts to end the half 14-7.
Springfield’s kicker Jake Eden started the second half with an onside kick attempt that the Colts took possession of, giving them good field position, but Springfield’s defense again stepped up with the linebackers and safeties (Tommy Ward, Alfonsi, Sciarrino, Eden, Chambers and Williams) getting into action to control the Colts.
The Colts did score another TD in the fourth quarter. As time was running out, Alfonsi ran for a long touchdown to end the scoring 20-13 with the Colts on top.

On Sept. 17, the Cougars hosted the Rose Tree Colts.
The Cougars’ first play was a 30-yard run by Tanner Robinson. Strong blocking by Chris Rich, Michael Eberhardt, and Aiden Hoopes allowed Jimmy O’Neill to make a diving touchdown followed with an extra point by Robinson.
The Colts’ chance to answer was quieted by a fumbled kick-off, recovered by the Cougars. Blocking by Cougar O-liners, Chris Brolley, Aidan Shandley, Kevin Rechner and Carson Shaner allowed Terence Kelly to complete another successful hand-off for a touchdown by Robinson. Franco Tommarelli was on-target for the extra point.
Cougar special teamers stopped the Colts’ second attempt John McCormick, Garrett Cooley, Dylan Archer and Danny Albany, forcing another fumbled kick-off, and recovery by the Cougars.
Kelly and Robinson completed a 35-yard play for another touchdown. Jarring tackles by Jake Bush, Nick Finizio and Dylan Laffey held the Colts at the 45, crushing their attempts to get on the board. The Cougars end the first half with a lead of 20-0.
Paul Conlan, Vince DiVario, Kyle Holstein and Jake Quatrani greeted the third quarter with powerful tackling. Khalid Holman-Dark came up big by sacking the Colts’ quarterback twice, ending their possession.
The Colts had one last shot, but Matt Santarelli, Ethan Scott, Pat Dougherty and Joe Pontano held strong. An interception by Jake Vaughan to the 20-yard line ended the game.

SAA 11-U Blue Storm accomplishments recognized by Springfield Council

Commissioners approved a resolution to celebrate the accomplishments of the Springfield Athletic Association 11-U Blue Storm team. The 11-year-olds had an outstanding season with an amazing record of 81-7-3 over their two years as a team -- District 1 Champions, PA State Champions and Cal Ripkin Mid-Atlantic Regional Champions. They were also the winners of the Aston/Middletown and Chichester tournaments. Members of the team were David Bingaman, Zach Chevalier, Michael Conran, Chris Direnzo, Cole Dumont, Justin Eckard, Jeff Houtmann, Layne Kelly, Nicky Kutufaris, Jared Morris, Steven Sulpizio and Cam Thorpe. Head coach John Morris was joined by assistant coaches Nick Kutufaris, Bob Dumont and Dave Thorpe. The boys were acknowledged for their determination, attitude and team approach to the game and their efforts.

Both teams playing a 2/3/2 with Nolan Hartke in as keeper, the Venom seemed to have the majority of the fisrt half on their side of the field. There was a breakaway from the Union, but shot cleared away with a big boot by Eamon McKeown past mid-field! Venom had surge with good passing down to Allen Cieslak, with a shot on goal just wide left. Benji Morse displayed some great footwork and moved the ball down to McKeown for a shot on goal, kicked over the goalie and cross bar, Eric Hibbs chased for a follow up, shot, miss wide right another great showing of passing, skills and shots on goal. The Venom cleared agaon from a threat form the Union, Aidan Gebey had a pass to Morse who attempted shot, missed wide left. The Second run from the Union, moved the ball into shooting range, around the defenders, shot on goal, but Hartke saved and denied the goal! Venom moved the ball only a short portion of the field and then kicked near goal, where Conrad Brady was headed and cleared out with a great defensive play. Venom moves the ball down field only to turnover to a faster Union where the attempted another shot on Hartke but rejected again!

The 1^st half ended with null-null result, but some great defensive efforts, passing and shots on Union.

Venom began the half with McKeown in goal to rely on his boot. Venom immediately started out fast with a breakaway down in Union territory with Morse shot on goal, moved the ball up field. Corner kick by Union, cleared by Morse, save by McKeown. McKeown kick down field to Nick D’Achille, shot attempt, moved wide right on the striker. Unlucky trip call foul on Duncan Riegler, kick from Union shifted and Morse moved in a second breakaway up field and stopped short due to hand ball, Gebey to kick and then Yellow Card issued to Union for positioning opponent to close to the ball. Riegler moves to Left side, pass to Gebey for boot to sideline finding Hibbs who passed to an open Morse and closed into the back of net – GOAL Venom. The team’s great effort to move the ball around defenders paid off to take them up 1-0.

At mid field, Conor McCabe illustrated some good ball dribbling and moved it coast to coast alluding defenders, shot on goal by McCabe but saved by Union keeper. On Union’s last possession, we so surge heading down side but Cielslak beat them to the goal and cleared the kick for a great defensive move. Venom cleared out and head a breakaway controlled by Brady down left center until time expired.

Great skills and an assist for Hibbs and winning score by Morse took the Venom to their first Victory 1-0-0. Next game will be played on home field Coopertown, 11:20 v. Coventry Celtic on Saturday 10/17.

U14 Haverford Heat participates in Keystone Cup

The U14 Girls Haverford Heat Soccer Team traveled to Lancaster, PA to participate in the Keystone Cup 2011 over the Labor Day weekend. The Heat players advanced to the semi-final round on Sunday morning, where they outlasted a team from Hershey 3-0. In the final game, the Heat yielded to a team from Maryland by a single goal in a well-played outing. The Heat Coaches were pleased with the players efforts, stamina, and their overall level of soccer. The Heat will compete in PAGs Division 2 in the U14 Age group this fall.

Springfield's CYO football wins season opener

The St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) fifth- and sixth-grade football team opened the 2011 season with a 27-0 victory over St. Patrick of Malvern on a sun splashed Saturday morning at Cardinal O’Hara High School.
The first half featured three special team scores for SFA. Nicky Kutufaris returned the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown, and Mike Conran reached the end zone twice with punt returns of 62 and 60 yards. Conran booted an extra point, and SFA led 20-0 at half time.
Neither team was able to generate any offense in the third quarter and the starters were done for the day.
In the fourth quarter, SFA tacked on their final touchdown when Joe Carpenter raced 21 yards around end. James Kutufaris darted off tackle for the extra point and the scoring was complete at 27-0.
SFA’s defense recorded a shutout and allowed only two first downs. Leading tacklers were Justin Shields, Derek Strain, Marty O'Connell, Tommy Kutufaris, Cole Dumont, Patrick Devine and Johnathan Mears. O'Connell also recovered a fumble.

Springfield Youth Club Football begins season

The 80-pound varsity lost a hard fought season opener to the Brandywine Youth Club on the road Sept. 2. The first play of the game was a 65-yard touchdown run by BYC. The Cougars then went to work, led by quarterback Nicky Donegan. The offensive line of Nick Cariola, Thomas Dougherty. Colin Renning, Danny Tommarel1i, Cole Rhodes, DJ Curtis and Brian King faced a very strong BYC defensive line.
Despite the strong running efforts of Alex Williams, Jake Eden and Dominick Alfonsi, the Cougars were unable to tie the game, which turned into a defensive battle, neither budging to give up the one big play that would win the game. At the end of the half it was still 7-0.
The Cougars took possession in the beginning of the third period, but were still stonewalled by BYC.
BYC took position of the ball, looking like they would score again, but the defense led by Alex Sciarrino, Kieran Morse, Tommy Ward, Cole Rhodes, Michall Leon, Danny Tommarelli and Nick Cariola kept pushing the bulldogs back.
BYC tried to run a few reverses but the linebacker crew of Dominick Alfonsi, Jake Eden and Safety Alex Williams was all over the running back.
The momentum changed after that huge defensive stand. The Cougars put together a great offensive drive, which put them on the five-yard line. Dominick Alfonsi ran hard up middle for a touchdown, but the Cougars were unable to convert the extra point.
The fourth quarter again was a defensive battle; unfortunately the Cougars ran out of time and fell short in this hard fought game.
100-Pound Junior Varsity

The Cougars took on the Brandywine Youth Club Bulldogs on Sept. 3. In the first half, Nick Finizio, Patrick Dougherty and Garret Cooley came up big with key stops making it difficult for BYC to gain yards.
The Cougars’ Dylan Archer, Paul Conlan, Jake Quatrani, Joe Pontano, and Ethan Scott had an excellent defensive series, stopping BYC at every attempt. Offensively, fantastic blocking by Carson Shaner and Chris Rich allowed Khalid Dark to speed up the middle. Chris Brolley and Michael Eberhardt kept BYC’s defense at bay. Terence Kelly completed a pass to Tanner Robinson for a touchdown. While Kevin Rechner blocked, allowing Jake Vaughan to catch the one-point conversion, giving the Cougars the lead at 7-0.
Franco Tommarelli’s powerful kick set BYC back to the 35. With less than 30 seconds left, Aiden Hoopes made a game saving tackle, and Dylan Laffey blocked a pass ending the first half at 7-7.
In the second half, Jimmy O’Neill exploded up the middle for a first down. The Cougar defense stayed focused, holding BYC at the 25. Aggressive tackling by John McCormick, Vince DiVario, and Kyle Holstein, forced BYC to fumble, giving the Cougars the ball on the 25. With three minutes left in the game, Terence Kelly passed to Tanner Robinson pushing the Cougars to the 12-yard line. Kelly passed to Jimmy O’Neill for a touchdown, and then to Franco Tommarelli for the extra point, giving the Cougars the lead at 14-7.
BYC’s come back was lost due to strong tackling by Danny Albany and Matt Santarelli. Finally, Chris Brolley tripped up BYC’s quarterback ending the game.
Varsity Notes
In other weekend notes, the SYC 100-pound varsity team crushed the Bulldogs and won 19-0.
The 120-pound varsity squad traveled to BYC and won their season opener 19-6.

Haverford Soccer Club Kicks Off the Fall Soccer Season

Summer’s over, school has started and so has fall soccer for the Haverford Soccer Club. This weekend over 2,300 children from our community will play their first games of the season on intramural and traveling teams for the HSC.

With a mission to promote youth soccer in our community, the Haverford Soccer Club offers programs for children of all abilities beginning at age 3 and continuing through age 18. Programs for the youngest children focus on skills and ball touches in a group setting. As they grow and develop, the HSC offers players the opportunity to play on intramural (“shirt league”) teams with other children from the area, or to compete at a higher level on travel teams against other soccer clubs in the region. For children with special needs, Haverford Soccer Club offers the TOPSoccer program which is designed to give boys and girls with mental or physical disabilities an opportunity to learn and play soccer.

The Haverford Soccer Club is proud to have some of the lowest registration fees in the area for youth soccer programs. As part of their commitment to increase participation and exposure to soccer, the HSC even offers financial assistance for families in need and scholarships to graduating seniors. Sponsorships from businesses in the community are one way that the Club manages to cover expenses without raising fees. This year, the HSC will be undertaking a major fundraiser in the form of the Welsh Cup, a soccer tournament for boys and girls travel teams ages U8 through U12. The tournament will take place on November 19/20, 2011 and will draw teams from around the region. (www.hscwelshcup.org )

Behind the scenes work for the fall soccer season has been underway for months. As the largest youth sports organization in Haverford Township, the HSC faces the somewhat daunting task of scheduling games for 152 intramural and 37 travel teams. Each weekend this fall, there will be approximately 95 games played on about 24 fields at 12 locations throughout Haverford Township. Coordinating this effort requires a virtual army of volunteers to assign teams, set up schedules, assign referees, distribute equipment and prepare the fields for play. Luckily, the HSC has a dedicated Board of Directors and volunteers.

HSC President Jonathan Donley had this to say about the upcoming season: “Soccer is growing more popular than ever in the Philadelphia area. The Haverford Soccer Club is growing as well. In addition to the greatest volunteer coaches on the planet, the club has increased its training offerings for both coaches and players by bringing in a Director of Coaches and Training, Steve Roper. Steve works with the Intramural, Travel and Developmental Academy programs to ensure proper training is in place and provides state and national licensing opportunities for our coaches.

Great players need great fields. We have increased our efforts to upgrade and maintain the fields by working with the Township to help improve field conditions for our players and other groups who use the fields. Heading up field maintenance is Michael Gove, our Director of Field Maintenance, and Bob Burd, our Field and Facilities Coordinator.

Great volunteer coaches, increased training opportunities and improved fields all make this a great year to be a member of the Haverford Soccer Club.”

Billy Mock Golf Outing at Edgmet Country Club

U11 Cheetahs win Ridley United Soccer Invitational

The U11 Rose Tree Cheetahs recently took first place in the Ridley United Invitational Soccer tournament. After earning two victories in their bracket, 4-0 and 6-0, the Cheetahs had their work cut out for them in the finals. Despite a constant downpour for most of the game, the Cheetahs kept their composure and scored in the final minute of the game to win the championship, 3-2.

The Springfield 11U Blue Storm capped off a successful season by capturing the Cal Ripken Mid-Atlantic Regional Title last week in Waynesboro, Pa.
After losing the opening game 1-0 to suffer its first shutout in three years, the Blue Storm rallied back to win six straight games over state champions and runners up from New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, including an impressive payback win against Medford N.J who handed the Blue Storm their only defeat of the tournament.
Decisive victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals earned them a trip against fellow District 1 competitor Hilltop from Havertown. A hard fought battle ensured a great game to be watched by all with Springfield emerging on top with a 5-2 victory.
The Blue Storm’s season included championships at the Aston Middletown and Chichester Tournaments. They team also captured its third straight Cal Ripken District 1 Championship and its second straight Cal Ripken Pennsylvania State Championship, going undefeated in both for two straight years and capped it off with the Cap Ripken Mid-Atlantic Regional Champions.

'Red' team wins annual Media Softball Intermediate Division All Star game

The Red team had players from Donnelly Concrete, Foxwood & Christie Orthodontics, Hagan Funeral Home and Produce Junction.
The Yellow team was made up of girls from Bondurant Plumbing & Heating, Foxwood & Christie Orthodontics, Front Street Fountain and Media 5 Mile Run

For the Red, Paige Purnell, hit a grand slam and was awarded a game ball by her coaches.
Rebecca Powell and Shannon Kelly were both 2-2, scoring twice.
Erin Gilligan, was 2-3 with 2 RBIs.
Caroline Shafer, Danielle Heller, Kailey Martin and Samantha Martin were all 2-3, with an RBI each.
Erika Rosenbloom was 1-2, with a walk. Jenna Goddard was 1-1, with 2 walks.
Amanda Allen, Claudia Fadgen, Christina Defelice and Savannah Harmon all went 1-3.

For the Yellow Team, Taylor DeMarcantonio was 2-2, including 2 doubles and was given the game ball for her team.
Kaitlyn Herron went 3-3, with an RBI.. Sheila Malone was 1-2, with a walk.
Jessica Davis and Rachel Kent were both 2-3. Rachel also scored once.
Hannah Farkas, Lea Hart, Leah Hill, Cali Holber, Kelly Long, and Samantha Taddei were all 1-3

The Yellow team opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with 2 runs. The Red team scored once in the bottom of the fourth. Next, the Yellow team scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth.
The Yellow team's lead was short-lived with the Red team scoring 7 in the bottom of that inning and again in the bottom of the 6th inning.
The Yellow team scored again in the top of the seventh inninng, but it was not enough.
The final score was 15-7 in favor of the Red team.

The Red team had players from Apollo Pizza, Credit Mediators, Media Police Association and Rosemont Pharmacy Stars.
The Yellow team was made up of girls from Marcia's Hair Salon, Media 5 Mile Run, Pinocchios' Pizza and Welsh Subaru

For the Red, Aurora DiFranco hit a single and a triple to go 2-3. She was awarded a game ball by her coaches. Margaret Howe-Consiglio, Mya Humphries and Rebecca Friedmann were all 2-3.
Madison Ruggieri, Lauren Magnarelli and Nikole Koenig all went 2-2. Brianna Dunn was 1-2. along with Sara Grassi who had a triple and a walk.
Alexis Calloway and Sarah Jane Whittemore went 1-3. Sara Myers-Maloney had a walk and a rbi.

For the Yellow Team, Sophie Roe was 3-3, including 2 doubles, 5 RBIs, winning the game ball for her team. Carly D'Ambrosio, Elizabeth Fyfe and Sydni Page-Williams all went 2-3.
Kylie Chelo went 2-2, including a double and 2 runs scored. Morgan King and Julie Santangelo both were 1-2 with a run scored.
Sarah Hughes was 1-1, 2 walks, run scored. Gianna Saulino went 1-2, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored.
Kirsa Emmons and Maddie Sitley were both 1-2, Maddie also had a RBI. Sydney Born was 1-3.

In the top of the first inning, the Yellow team scored 5 runs. The Red team answered back with 5 runs in the next two innings.
The Yellow team broke the tie with 4 runs, but the Red team countered with 5. Going into the lsst inning, the score was 9-8 for the Red team.
But the Yellow team took the lead for good with 5 more runs. The Red team's rallied, scoring twice, but they fell short. The final score was 14-12 in favor of Yellow

Qualifying Hidden Hollow Hammerhead swimmers will compete in “A” Championships at Marple Newtown Swim Club on Saturday, July 31st. The Hidden Hollow Hammerheads are coached by Bob Piotti.

Haverford U17 Spartans complete successful summer

The Haverford Spartans, Haverford SC U-17 Boys premier soccer team, finished a very successful summer tournament schedule. The Spartans finished as finalists in the Ukrainian Nationals Tournament, were champions of the Lehigh Valley Soccer Tournament, and won the Mid-Atlantic Cup Tournament in Manheim, PA over the July 9-10 weekend. In doing so, they have moved up to #26 in the Pennsylvania East State Rankings.

The team is composed of players from Haverford and the surrounding areas and have proven themselves by playing with character and poise throughout the entire season. The team will be having tryouts for next year. Call Coach Severini for information 610-449-3640.

Media Little League wins District 19 title

Media Little League's 12-Year-Old District Team won the District 19 championship against Delaware Valley by a score of 14-7. Grand slams were hit by both Alex Burman and Sam Freedman.

Nether Providence wins Del Val Yoth League Pee Wee title

The Nether Providence Athletic Association Girls Softball U10 team defeated the talented Springfield girls’ team, 14-9, last week at Smedley Park to capture the Del Val Youth League's Pee Wee C North Division Championship.
